Soccer is where I spend most of my time; whether I am thinking about it, talking about it, or playing it, soccer is influencing me in some way. It only makes sense that my experiences with the sport and the people I have met while playing it have had such a profound effect on the person I am today. Every teammate and coach has altered the way I think and, subsequently, opened my mind. Being faced with new cultures or obstacles has given me a new perspective on the importance of being open to change that will help me to be successful in the future. Growing up, from the time I started my first day of class until walking across my hometowns football field to receive my diploma I never had thought that I let something define the person that I have become today. However, being presented with this essay I have come to the realization that football has defined me as a person. I don’t mean to say that the sport has had this much of an impact on me, I’d rather like to think that the memories associated with the sport has made an everlasting impact on my life.
Soccer is a great sport that can captivate the world and bring people together. The sport has evolved from just a game; it has become a way of life for most people not just in the United States but also around the world. In the novel “How Soccer Explains the World” by Franklin Foer, he gives great insight on various ways soccer has impacted the world. Soccer can be the explanation for gangsters, racial and religious, and everything in between.
Over the years, soccer has changed me as a person. I love thinking back at the great memories I had playing soccer. I plan to never stop playing soccer. Hopefully, I will play on the club team at Shippensburg and never give it up. This was one of my most memorable moments in my life playing soccer. Through soccer I made friends, learned how to be a team player and helped me bring my family closer together. If it wasn’t for soccer I wouldn’t be who I am today and I am very grateful for this.
After four years of a new team every season, I went into my first practice of my fifth soccer season expecting the same to be true. Play on this team for one year and then be randomly placed on a different one the following year. Little did I know this team, especially the coaches, would leave a lasting impact on my life. I gained an invaluable support system that has stuck by my side for an upwards of nine years.
When I was ten years old, I was as curious, vibrant, energetic, and naive as the next child. I enjoyed playing with my toys, playing sports, reading, and asking a lot of questions about how the world works. Then, I thought I was invincible and that I could do whatever I set my mind to. If I wanted my occupation to be an astronaut ballerina it was going to happen and that was that. At ten years old, I was also introduced to my family in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas for the first time, and I was both really delighted and really despondent at the same time.
Being blessed with another day of life, waked up by the sunrise of a beautiful day. Had a couple of peaceful seconds in my mind, but eventually I started to remember all the things I had to do by the end of this infinite day. Just by thinking about it got me exhausted. I got up from my comfortable bed and took a warm shower. While, taking a shower, I was thinking of a million things; how I was going to present my project in engineering class. Or how I was going to finish my other projects for my other 3 classes? What can do to improve on my soccer skills and accomplish varsity this year? How I was going to get accepted into college and how I’m paying for college? Problems that make me feel in a diverse world. However, I checked if I had everything
I have been playing in soccer since elementary school and consider it a huge part in my life. As a team we share common goal of winning our soccer games and trying to be a better team. I had soccer practices every week so I become closer to my teammates. We communicate over phone and converse about when our practices are and will be playing. We speak face about strategies in soccer and how to be better team. We communicate during the game on different line-ups and plays. Being a good communicator is a key objective in soccer and will help us win our games. I also was part of the school band and played the trombone. The band community is a large community that not only consists of the band members but the parents and teachers. We communicate about the different music we play and how to play better on our instruments. We usually communicate face to face during our band practices. I had a good relationship with my band members. The band community has had a big influence on me and gave me a better understanding on how to be a good communicator.
I honestly believe without football I would not have an identity since it played a crucial role in shaping me into the caring, smart, and passionate person I am today. Before football you could not pinpoint the difference between the herds of people who did not have a care in the world and myself. Ever since the 6th grade I frequently arrived to school tardy, got into multiple fights for no apparent reason, and often received disappointing grades; these bad habits became a daily routine that derived from the fact that I did not know any better. After being raised by parents who did not finish high school and never stressed the importance of school, I had no one to instill a moral compass within me. Soccer has always been a part of my life since I was four years old, it has also been in my family for a very long time. My father played soccer all his life and also in college, the same thing goes for my sister she also played in college. So soccer is in my blood and because of that reason and because I have been playing since I was four years old it has taught me some very important lessons that will benefit me greatly through the rest of my life.
Soccer has guided me in many ways to become the person I am. Especially in high school, the sport has showed me how to be much more cooperative and open with others. Before high school, I isolated myself from others and had only a few close friends. Rather than being a sociable, I acted as though I was the only person in the world and had the outlook that as long as I do what is right individually, there is no need for me to work with others. This outlook changed when I joined the soccer team at Holy Spirit, my high school. With the way soccer is at the high school level, I had no choice but to cooperate and associate my selves with others. Once on the field, instead of introducing myself as "me" I had to introduce myself as a part of the team. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Sometimes I wanted to drive to games myself, and I was not allowed to because we are supposed to travel together and it would be wrong to the team for me to separate myself from the group.
This is crucial because, the team itself becomes each of the player’s supporters. In such a demanding game it would be extremely difficult to be just an individual. Not only is being a part of the team important in the game but also in life. Learning how to work with other members of a team is something that can be carried over into the work field and all areas of life. Many of these teams are formed starting at very young ages. This is becoming more and more popular around the US. Youth development provides community and confidence at an early age. As kids grow older, the teams become more serious which takes people from many different cities and even states and puts them on one team. Eventually leading to people from all different countries joining one team
The definition of soccer: “A game played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball that may not be touched with the hands or arms during play except by the goalkeepers. The object of the game is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponent 's ' goal.” When I think about the thing I’m most passionate about, soccer pops into my head right away. Soccer represents more than just a game to me. The sport gives me an outlet distract me from the real world, it taught me to overcome a battle that shaped my character, and my teammates bring out the best in me.
I was always taught that soccer was to be about the love of the game and that it should be fun. Unfortunately, I faced many obstacles that I needed to overcome before I could truly love the game for what it was worth. I grew and continued to love the game, knowing little at the time of the obstacles I would be faced with, and would need to overcome. My struggles with soccer began early in my life. I was an average player, who had a drive to succeed and go far.
As the crowd begins their chants and anthems, the teams take their places upon the pitch. The ground is shaking underneath you and smoking flares are lighting up around the stadium. Welcome to the world of football. Soccer has become a way of life for many and an escape from reality. It is the game for any class and will steal your heart with the art that comes with it. Soccer isn’t just a sport, it is a religion many follow, but most importantly it brings masses around the world together. We call this, the Beautiful Game. If this claims to be the most popular sport around the world, why is soccer not considered a big sport and why has it never caught on in America?
