The Renaissance was a period that bridged the gap between the medieval times for chivalry to the more sophisticated, modern advancements of a new world. The Renaissance brought the change of a new government after the Hundred Years War. With France and England the dispute over who is the rightful owner of the throne, brought the change of a monarchy into the modernistic type of government. This monarchy essentially made the family of a select few the rulers for generations. Other systems that help the king and queen were established. since the king and queen could not rule solely by themselves without some sort of a power struggle, system that help evice the throne were established, for instance parliament, and the house of commons. The Renaissance Period is widely known for the abundance of amazing portraiture that circulated around Europe. During the Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer, a German artist painted a self-portrait in 1500 that had qualities that differed from the usual style of artist in that time (Chauhan). Jean Clouet also painted a portrait for the King of France and became the official court painter. Both artists had a talent for portraiture, while their styles were quite different. King Francis I wanted to be seen as a powerful man, and appointed Clouet to paint him in a classically renaissance way that highlights his wealth and authority. Dürer, described as a cocky, self-centered man, painted himself in a light that is unique and puts him on a ‘holy’ pedestal (Stokstad 356). In this essay I will show how although both paintings have clear differences with their style, both men in the compositions are conveyed in a great and very powerful sense.
The western worldview grew out of ideas that were brought about by the Black Death, the humanist movement, and religious reform. The Black Death killed most of Europe’s population, opening spots for jobs and spots to move in the feudal system. This caused people to think out of the box, it also helped people see that everyone had something in common king or serf. The humanist movement also had a key role that helped people see the bigger picture. Last but no least the religious reform also played a key role. After new ideas came from the humanisms people questioned things they hadn’t before. These are the three main topics for the growth of the western worldview.

As previously stated, the renaissance was the rebirth of society. What led to this was a decrease in faith because of the great schism, a conflict between two popes, where both said they were the pope. People were starting to take a secular view compared to what the church told them to believe. Society was changing to where individual viewpoints mattered. With politics starting to matter, and a better economy, places were beginning to be city centered, specifically city states, which are urban societies that have taken secular views.

By applying renaissance ideas into their religious terms, Christian humanists eventually lead to a new wave of thinking in Europe. Christian humanists like Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More applied renaissance ideas in new ways by teaching based on biblical rules instead of Cicero or Virgil. Their wisdom was based on antiquity, but instead of being referenced to the classics, Christian Humanists referred to the New Testament and early church. These new ideas would influence changes in Europe by debating the principles of the Church. Erasmus was able to apply renaissance ideas in new ways by separating himself from the past church’s restrictions.
