Numerous philosophers have left their mark on the world. Using their words and writings to voice their thoughts, these philosophers have set standards of our society today. One thousand and seven hundred years ago the worlds most well known and famous philosopher Socrates had his teaching dictated by his pupil Plato. These two philosophers directly impacted and changed the world forever by teaching western philosophy and ethics. Socrates proved a universal moral standard and encouraged people to uphold ethical standards in their lives. Socrates and Plato were only two of the many philosophers that would leave their impact on the world. Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus Christ) is the most known philosopher in the western world. Jesus began his ministry in Judea, near the Jordan River. He then travels, preaches, and preforms miracles before completing his ministry with the Last Supper in Jerusalem. Jesus was then crucified and then he later rose from the grave and ascended into heaven. Jesus spread his philosophy through the Middle East and left an ever-lasting impact on the world. Jesus’s last documented conversations in the Bible was with Paul, while he was traveling on the road to Damascus and then he instructed Ananias of Damascus to heal Paul when he arrived in Damascus. He then he reveled to John a revelation. The second biggest philosopher to spread the philosophy of Christianity was Saul of Tarsus, better known as Paul the Apostle. Fourteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament have been attributed to Paul the Apostle. This paper will examine Paul entire life and how his teachings changed the world. But, rise and enter the city, and you will be told what to do.” For three days Saul was made blind by Jesus and did not eat or drink. Then, Ananias walked into where Saul was staying and restored his sight, something like scales fell off his eyes and he could see. After being in Damascus with the disciples he proclaimed that Jesus is the one true God. Then, he fled to Jerusalem where he joined the disciples with the help of Barnabas, changed his name to Paul and became a missionary to Christ. He set out on three missionary journeys where on his third, he was put under house arrest in Rome for two years where he wrote the book of Ephesians. After his release, he left, went to Spain, and was eventually persecuted and martyred by Nero.

It looks as though his wisdom is unsurmountable, as he did believe himself to be the most brilliant man in the universe, while also knowing for sure: the only thing he knows is that he doesn’t know anything. Unlike the famous Kouros statues that were all alike and used for a certain purpose of a grave maker, or shrine to the gods, the portrait of Socrates shows depth and importance. During the classical period it became increasingly common for Greek sculptures to depict more realistic forms. The portrait of Socrates details a man who was not afraid to ask hard questions, it also puts across the point that he may have been revered and feared as well by the Greeks. His statue was created twenty years after his death. For a man who was accused of corrupting the youth, and executed for it, one might question why then did someone find this man to be deserving of a statue? Did the Greeks begin to side with his ideas and theories after a low point in their victories? Perhaps the views of the sophists were beginning to surpass the previous views of Greek culture. This sculpture may have been the Apotheosis of Socrates’ career, a way to elevate him to a trailblazer status during a period when the gods were being pushed from explanation of cause in the lives of the Greeks.
