The author Cassandra Clare once said, “Only the very weak-minded refused to be influenced by literature and poetry.” The art of the written word has often times been underappreciated, nevertheless, literature has influenced the lives of many people. There are many forms of writing, and among them, there is poetry. Poetry stands out because it varies significantly among every writer and there are no rules for how it can be composed. Every author has significant meaning behind the poems they write, and readers often try to interpret what that meaning is in order to create a connection. Maybe not all forms of writing, but one that could’ve been an influence on someone is poetry. The power of poetry is often times underestimated because of the way its simplicity is assumed. Although poems can be short, they contain an incredible amount of meaning, symbolism, and connections for readers. Looking at Emily Dickinson’s poetry, she portrays her messages through themes and demonstrates what got her to be one of the most substantial poets of America. As mentioned earlier, she was influenced by many greats before her, especially Walt Whitman, who lived through the war as well. An article reads, “…all civilians were touched by universal anxiety about the welfare of relatives and friends on the battlefield,” (Baker). Not only did Emily Dickinson have the misfortune of living through a war close to home, she dealt with personal tragedies. Nonetheless, she used writing as her escape from these things and contributed a part of literature you can now appreciate. Perhaps you can think of a time when you struggled to fight through something difficult. Some of them even write poems that touches us so much that we could almost feel and know what their going through. Audre Lorde, a professional and amazing writer, was a great example of that. She wrote about her experiences with cancer, black issues, and how attacks on being a lesbian was a black issue. There were reasons for that.

Fredrick Douglass lived a life of sorrow, pain and cruelty. Yet, as a fine gentleman that he was, he managed to find the joy in his childhood. He remembered the marvelous memories he encountered when he was taught how to read and write and that’s what kept him going. Writing changed his life for the better. It encouraged him to keep on doing what he loved even if he was constantly being put down and discouraged. The love for writing saved Douglass from slavery. Even if Douglass passed on, his writing remains and continues to be legendary.
Literature has played a large role in the way we perceive the world and it can affect the way in which we think about things. Edgar Allan Poe along with Mark Twain are two of the most influential authors that our world has ever seen. Their descriptiveness and diction has had a huge impact on their readers for centuries. Poe’s gothic style of writing was very enthralling and suspenseful; it left you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Whereas, Mark Twain was a very humorous author that intended to amuse all that read. The descriptiveness that was incorporated by these world-renown authors is tremendous.

Emily Dickinson is one of the great visionary poets of nineteenth century America. In her lifetime, she composed more poems than most modern Americans will even read in their lifetimes. Dickinson is still praised today, and she continues to be taught in schools, read for pleasure, and studied for research and criticism. Since she stayed inside her house for most of her life, and many of her poems were not discovered until after her death, Dickinson was uninvolved in the publication process of her poetry. This means that every Dickinson poem in print today is just a guess—an assumption of what the author wanted on the page. As a result, Dickinson maintains an aura of mystery as a writer. However, this mystery is often overshadowed by a more prevalent notion of Dickinson as an eccentric recluse or a madwoman. Of course, it is difficult to give one label to Dickinson and expect that label to summarize her entire life. Certainly she was a complex woman who could not accurately be described with one sentence or phrase. Her poems are unique and quite interestingly composed—just looking at them on the page is pleasurable—and it may very well prove useful to examine the author when reading her poems. Understanding Dickinson may lead to a better interpretation of the poems, a better appreciation of her life’s work. What is not useful, however, is reading her poems while looking back at the one sentence summary of Dickinson’s life.

When reading or listening to poetry, the main objective for me is to feel moved. Happiness, longing, sadness are some of the feelings that can be achieved just by listening to others’ words. It is within these words that creates another world, or separates us from our own. In conclusion, I feel poets mainly write poems to express feelings, thoughts, and messages to the world. It’s an easy approach for them to use this writing technique as a way to articulate different aspects which could be improved in this world. I think what attracts people to poetry is writing which relates to each person in their everyday life no matter how it could be portrayed by. For some people poetry could be a relaxing thing or it could be something which cheers someone up, but people look to poetry to get a deeper thinking in life rather than a simpler thinking. This is clearly evident through authors, William Wordsworth and William Blake, and their poems “The World is too Much with Us” and “The Tyger.” Both poems related to one another one way or another, and they depicted different messages and themes which do relate to real life situations.

It is imperative that the reader digs deep within the story to accurately analyze and understand the message the author is trying to portray. Authors tend to hide themselves in their stories. The reader can learn about the author through literary elements such as symbolism, diction, and structure. A good example of this is Robert Frost’s poems The Road Not Taken and Nothing Gold can Stay in which he uses ordinary language unlike many other poets that became more experimental (Frost, Robert. “1.”).
