The Frank family decided to go into hiding in the Annex when Margot received a call asking her to go to a concentration camp in Germany. The next day the Franks, Van Pels and shortly after Fritz Pfeffer went into hiding in the annex. Overall there were eight people hiding in a the small 500 square foot annex. However the annex was very spacious compared to other hiding places jews hid in because of the war. They were in the annex for a little over two years before they were caught on August 4th, 1944. The families were separated, and in September of 1944, the family was transported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination and concentration camp in Poland. Anne and Margot were not killed in the Auschwitz gas chambers but were rather sent to Bergen-Belsen, which was a concentration camp located in northern Germany. The sisters died in March of 1945 from typhus at Bergen-Belsen. After their death, their bodies were simply thrown into an unmarked mass grave. A few weeks after their death in April, Bergen-Belsen was liberated by the British. Otto Frank was the only member of the Secret Annex to have survived the Holocaust, having been liberated from Auschwitz by Soviet troops in January of 1945.
Throughout the holocaust, many Jews survived by going into hiding to escape the harsh fates and realities that would otherwise await the opressed. On July 1942, the Frank family lived their own house and Anne’s cat and moved to their hiding place. Their apartment was left in a state of disarray to create the impression that they had left suddenly, and Otto Frank left a note that hinted they were going to Switzerland. As Jews were not allowed to use public transport, they walked several kilometers from their home, with each of them wearing several layers of clothing as they did not dare be seen carrying luggage. In the secret annex, there are two small rooms, with an adjoining bathroom and toilet, were on the first level, and above that a larger open room, with a small room beside it.
