When I first began reading Chronicle of a Death Foretold, I was not quite sure why Pedro and Pablo Vicario had to kill Santiago Nasar. I understood that Angela Vicario had named Santiago as the person who took her virginity and therefore her honor, but I was unable to understand why this constituted such a violent response. With the help of the interactive oral I learned that in Colombian culture when a family is dishonored by another the only way to restore that honor is to kill the person, or people, that took it away. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, he establishes the innocence of Santiago Nasar through the biblical allusions in the murder scene, alluding to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the Bible. Marquez presents the murder of Santiago Nasar in this manner to exemplify the innocence of Nasar, which remained in question. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ symbolizes the innocence of Santiago Nasar because his crucifixion occurred because of the sins others even though he maintains his innocence.

In Columbian culture, society is hierarchical in which authority figures, mainly those involved in religion and justice, are considered to have a great deal of influence and responsibility towards the town they preside over. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Marquez attacks this idea and suggests that these figures are superficial and unimportant. He does this mainly through the religious and judicial figures of the Bishop, priest, police officer and the colonel as authority figures that ignore their duties, thus making authority in the village in illusion.
...all want to believe that the crime was truly “foretold”, and that nothing could have been done to change that, each one of the characters share in a part of Santiago Nasar’s death. Gabriel Garcia Marquez writes about the true selfishness and ignorance that people have today. Everyone waits for someone else to step in and take the lead so something dreadful can be prevented or stopped. What people still do not notice is that if everyone was to stand back and wait for others, who is going to be the one who decides to do something? People don’t care who gets hurt, as long as it’s not themselves, like Angela Vicario, while other try to reassure themselves by thinking that they did all that they could, like Colonel Lazaro Aponte and Clotilde Armenta. And finally, some people try to fight for something necessary, but lose track of what they set out for in the first place.
A political assassination in 1948 began the wave of future killings between rival parties and groups. This rivalry and violence became known as “La Violencia. ” Violence is a main theme seen and felt throughout the Garcia Marquez’s book, helping anyone unfamiliar with Colombian contemporary history to gain a deeper understanding of how the country and people have been and were affected. In the 1980s, drug traffickers and terrorist groups were plaguing the country with their own style of violence.
Honour went hand in hand with how reputable a family was considered to be within the community. There were two types of honour; “honor” which symbolized the honour brought to an individual by their family or their birth right, and “honra” which represented ones virtue in the sense of morality and piety or their saintliness. Honour killings would occasionally be performed (most often by men) on women who took lovers behind their husband’s backs. To restore his honour, the husband would be legally allowed to kill both his wife and her lover. Women would also resort to violent tendencies if anyone threatened their families’ honour and reputation. High class woman were known to protect both their own honour and the households by filing lawsuits and beating other women they saw as treats, making women more likely than men to act out in defence. In the “Scandal at the Church” case, Mr. de Alfaro indirectly refers to his wife’s and his family’s honour multiple times as his wife was attacked in the daylight crowds after mass. With so many people present to witness his wife’s beating and Mrs. Bravo’s insulting words, Mr. de Alfaro’s family honour was tarnished as a direct result from the scandal. Even as a man of a lower class, honour is still incredibly important as other families within the community base their perceptions on how honourable and thus reputable a family is. Mrs.

The Vicario brothers “followed Santiago Nasar with their eyes… they looked at him more with pity” rather than hatred or anger (Marquez, 16). The feeling of pity the Vicario brothers place upon Santiago does not correlate with the typical angry, fear, or remorse that are common feelings associated with murderous acts. Pity, as seen in the novella, is intertwined with sympathy; Pedro knows it was morally wrong to murder an innocent man and displaying his guilt. As the day advanced “everything continued to smell of Santiago Nasar” which lingered throughout the town (Marquez, 78). Santiago’s scent is ingrained into the town, almost like that of a poltergeist. Poltergeist are spectors commonly associated with producing noises, movements, and smells. This is a prime example of how religion and superstition play a role in the novel. The Vicario brothers could smell him in the jail cell, no matter how much the brothers scrubbed their hands, they “couldn’t get rid of the smell” of Santiago’s blood from their hands (Marquez, 78). The text above backs the idea of guilt in the novella’s society as the brothers cannot wash away the crime and sin they committed. Blood on the hands is a parallel to guilt that is a motif throughout the bible with thirty-four verses containing a direct reference to liability and blood on the hands. In this small Columbian town, Marquez illustrated the juxtaposition between men and women and how the double standards resulted in a violence, the death of Santiago Nasar. The women are expected to comply to societal expectations. The only way for a women to move up in society is through marriage. Women are taught to be submissive and that “love can be learned” so they would marry to uphold their families’ honor. The result of the numerous double standards in this novel leads to the death of Santiago Nasar in Chronicle of a Death Foretold because it was a matter of honor.
“We’re going to kill Santiago Nasar” (pg. 52) said Pablo and Pedro Vicario. They told everyone that they were going to “cut his guts out.” They spoke loudly of their intentions in the butcher market; they boast about it to Clotilde Armenta, and told Cristo Bedoya, Santiago’s best friend, to let Santiago know they were waiting to kill him. By the time the bishop’s boat arrived, nearly everyone in the town knew about the plot—except the victim Santiago himself. The two most important forces that Marquez uses to show why nobody stopped Santiago’s death were the Catholic religion of the town and the honor code (machismo) of the Vicario brothers. Whereas religion gives you the courage to make the decisions you must make in a crisis, and then the confidence to leave the result to a higher power, honor plays the catalyst role in this story that triggers nearly every event because the Vicario brothers were driven by the fact that they felt they must return their family’s honor at any cost.
The brutality of ancient society has long since past, yet in this modern era of civility, honor killings still exist. Honor killings take place in certain cultures within a family. Honor killing victims are most frequently females. If the family feels that they have brought shame or have dishonored the family in anyway the only means to get rid of the shame or dishonor is to kill that member of the family. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the theme of honor is one that presents itself throughout the novel by having a major role in the plot. In a small town in Colombia, honor is taken very seriously. Angela Vicario, a young bride, is returned to her family for not having her virginity intact. When her twin brothers find out about their sister’s dishonorable actions, they set out to murder the man who they believe did this.
Santiago Nasar’s hometown as a whole is just as guilty for his murder as the Vicario brothers. They all know of the twins’ plans to kill Santiago, yet no one goes out of their way to make sure he knows. The narrator writes that “in reality it seemed that the Vicario brothers had done nothing right with a view to killing Santiago Nasar immediately and without any public spectacle, but had done much more than could be imagined to have someone stop them from killing him, and they had failed” (Márquez 49).
