In American society, people live by everyday social norms. Those norms are different now than they in modern society, and they will continue to grow each century. Postmodern means after modern times, the 1960s was the specific time period of the postmodern era. The novel Catching Fire includes postmodern ideas such as increased violence and non-traditional women (feminism).
Since the 1960s, violence has increased tremendously in many places around the United States. Many people in society have come to the conclusion that media is to blame for increased violence because many children and adults watch a large amount of television, movies, and/or games. Graphic violence in the media has greatly increased since the 1960s (Torr 30). Violence on the screens do pose a risk to all viewers; according to the American Medical Association, seventy-nine percent of American’s believe media contributes to the real life violence in today’s society (31). Some viewers who are not easily influenced have shown the researchers there are more ways beside the media that have caused this increase in violence.
The average child watches twenty-five hours of television every week, that is plenty of time for a child to get influenced by the media violence (Dudley 106). Media has played, and is still playing a huge impact in our society but has specifically impacted the teens. In the movie Natural Born Killers, made in 1994, is considered a highly gory film, has apparently inspired many teens to go on killing sprees. The shooting incident at Columbine High School in 1999 had many similarities to Natural Born Killers. In society, people become accustomed to old and new characteristics and those characteristics of postmodernism is going to change every day. Violence in society of the postmodern era will always have a controversy if media influences violence or not. The media will always be there and not everyone can control what someone watches. Feminism is strong but it is going to increase and improve throughout the years. Each century that goes by, will always have a new postmodern characteristic; nothing will stay the same but the way people act. This will get better in the future and there might be less violence and more feminism taken place.
