Honor Codes are a set of rules or principles that are intended to cultivate integrity. They are not meant to be ways to turn peers against each other. Contrary to popular belief, an honor code is beneficial. Honor codes do cultivate integrity within students. An honor code is something every high school and college, including mine, should establish and maintain. What is the point behind cheating? Doesn’t everyone want their time spent in class to be worth something and not a complete waste of time? Personally, if I am going to spend lots of time sitting in a chair listening to teachers and professors ramble, I want it to be worthwhile. Honor Codes help to encourage this way of thinking wit everyone, even the students who would rather be anywhere else. Cheating does not only make studying, learning, and getting satisfactory grades easier, cheating takes away essential learning skills. The amount of cheating done at University of Virginia (Source D) is very minimal. The school has enforced rules against cheating and plagarism and have given valid punishments. Some may say that the punishments are too harsh, but the fact of the matter is, the students knew they would be punished, so why did they cheat? The students swear to and write their commitment to the honor code on every test. That has made UVA a richer academic environment. Doesn’t every school want to be a rich academic environment?
