Quick question: if you came home after a long day of work to find your apartment gone, where would you go? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to not have a home? As I drive around my community, it seems as though there is more and more homeless each year. Families, teens, human beings, are left starving through the rainy winter nights and hot summer afternoons. What is the solution to this problem of homelessness in Oahu? There is no easy answer--homelessness is a complicated issue with many factors, and it is not just all about providing a roof over head. It is a critical issue for society that I feel most passionate about. I believe we can do many things to help alleviate this problem. The primary approaches are to discourage direct handouts to the homeless, encourage family support, provide the mentally ill with a humane institutionalization, and provide substance abusers with the help …show more content…

Among surveyed homeless people by The National Coalition for the Homeless, 39 percent have some form of mental health problem, and between 20 percent and 25 percent meet criteria for serious mental illness. In addition, 38 percent of surveyed homeless people have an alcohol problem, and 26 percent report problems with other drugs (Nat 1). Humane Institutionalizations can help those with mental disabilities get the treatment they need in a safe and caring environment. The government needs to establish rehabilitation centers for the homeless people to recover from substance abuse. With this and the support of their families, many homeless will soon get well enough to eventually get a job, and thus back on their feet. Some may point out how long and difficult a process this would be, but I feel it will provide a better sense of optimism and compassion that modern-day society is in short supply
