Have you or someone you know ever been homeless? The right to housing in the United Nations declaration of human rights say that all people should have the access to housing. Homelessness is a problem in nearly every country around the world, including the United States of America, but not a lot of people realize it is a violation of a human right. It is a very populated issue due to the fact it is easy to get to but hard to get out. The issue is becoming more common to people now due to the unemployment and poverty rate going up, making it harder for people to afford living conditions. Homelessness means that the person in question lives in a car, the street, homeless shelters, or in subsidized transitional housing, and according to statistics from the a United Nations survey in 2005 the worldwide homelessness population was estimated to be one hundred million people. This issue should be addressed by country leaders and be seen as a human rights violation so that steps can be taken to reduce homeless rates.
Homelessness problem affecting every country in all corners of earth although some countries have taken steps to greatly reduce the homeless rate while other countries continue to grow. Athens, Greece is ranked the 15th city in terms of homelessness population and this is mostly due to a recession that hit the country hard and caused the unemployment rate to rise to twenty-seven percent. According to the Athens city hall most homeless suffer from depression and as a resort sixty percent use drug and alcohol while they roam the streets of the city.
