Recommended: Homelessness effects on society

Thousands of people are left to sleep in the streets every night. We do not typically think about why there is homelessness or how it could be solved, but it is time we consider the possible reasons as to why this is a big issue. As the number of homeless people rises, homelessness becomes a central feature of California. According to the 2012 homeless assessment report 33 percent of the nation’s chronic homeless population are Californians. Although homelessness is the result of individual choices, as a part of the community we must provide solutions to this ongoing battle. It is understood that most people in life are not going to be doctors or lawyers so they won’t be high wage earners. That should not mean that people who choose not to go to school should have to live on the streets. Not every homeless person is on the street because of drugs or abuse, always keep in mind that most people in this country are a paycheck or two away from being homeless. It only takes one job loss, illness, or traumatic event that can make you lose everything. It also means losing a fixed day and night schedule. Homeless individuals have way too much time on their hands. People who are poor are often unable to pay for major necessities such as housing, food and, health care. Homelessness is a caused by some personal detachment from society. This individual’s detachment is either caused by mental health, personal crisis, addiction, or traumatic events. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the National Coalition for the Homeless, there are three triggering factors that lead to homelessness, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, and health care ("Why Are People Homeless?"). Therefore, when exploring into more depth the determining reasons, considering the key roles that a home, money, and employment play in an individual’s life will facilitate a better understanding of the downward spiral towards homelessness.
