Homelessness Increasing in California California’s economy drops more and more every year, which causes there to be a rise in the homeless population. Homeless are impossible to avoid, especially in California, they have become people we see every day on the streets. Many factors increase the homeless population in California every year. Some of these factors include unemployment, mental illness/drug abuse, and prisoner release. With the homeless population rising there could be a huge health alert rising as well. As a community, we can decrease the population of homelessness. To begin with, unemployment is very common in California. California is one of the most expensive states in the United States and living here can be hard to maintain, it is so expensive because of California’s land regulations. Without a college degree, a good paying job can be hard to find, and this can lead people to get jobs that only pay minimum wage. It can also be very hard for people that didn’t attend college to maintain a house, buy groceries, and buy everyday necessities when everything in California is expensive. “California has an …show more content…

Going to jail changes your life completely, during your sentence and after you get released. Prisoners who just get out of jail are dangerous and somewhat scary to the public, which could lead businesses/ companies not to hire people that have been in jail because of their lack of trust, causing ex-prisoners to be homeless. A study from 2007 shows the unemployment rates among ex-prisoners, “In 2007, the National Institute of Justice found that 60 percent of ex-felon offenders remain unemployed a year after their release. Other studies have shown that upward of 30 percent of released felons live in homeless shelters because they can't find housing; and those are the lucky ones.
