Stanley Yelnats is the main character in Holes. He is a very unfortunate kid that has really bad luck. He is sent to a summer camp for a crime that he didn’t commit. He has the option to either go to jail, or to go to the summer camp. He chooses to go to the summer camp because the authorities make it seem like its not that bad. Stanley thinks the camp has a lake in which they would get to swim in the 95+ degree weather. When Stanley gets to the camp, he finds out that its not what he expected it to be. He is soon forced to dig holes along with all of the other juvenile deliquents. This is hard for him because of the extreme heat and dry land.

At this time, a school teacher named Kate Barlow falls in love with a black onion seller named Sam. When people of the town realise that a white woman was in love with a black man, they killed Sam and set the schoolhouse on fire. Kate become an outlaw and starts robbing and killing people while kissing the men she killed leaving a red lipstick imprint on her victims. She ends up killing Stanleys grandfather and burying his money somewhere but she died before she could tell anyone where it was. The day after Sam was killed, rain stop falling and Greenlake dries up.
There isn’t that many differences between the book and the movie. The main thing I noticed is that in the movie Igor Borkov (Stanleys best friend at the camp) plays a big part. In the book, he is mentioned very little. Also, when Sam dies in the book, Kate is with him in the boat. In the movie, Kate is standing on the side of the look and watches him get shot. Another difference I noticed is that in the movie Sir’s truck is silver while it a candy red in the movie. The last difference actually stood out pretty well.
