“Your responsible for yourself. You messed up your life. It’s up to you to fix it.” (Sachar 58) At the beginning of the novel, Holes, Stanley was a shy, quiet and insecure kid but because of his friend Zero, his personality changed. Throughout the novel, he became strong, and brave and his self esteem grew because of his actions at Camp Green Lake. In the beginning, Stanley was a wimpy and shy kid who had a low self esteem which made him a sad and depressed character in the story. Stanley was shy, awkward and his self esteem was low because he grew up being made fun of by Derrick Dunne. He was made fun of because he weighed a lot and was big kid. He had no friends and felt left out. (Sachar 7 and 23 ) Stanley was cursed and had bad luck. His “no good dirty rotten pig stealing Great Grandfather” cursed their family when he didn’t carry the gypsy up the mountain.(Sachar 37 ) Another reason for Stanley’s low self esteem was because he was blamed for everything! He becomes brave, a risk taker and confident. While he was at Camp Green Lake, he took the blame for taking the sunflower seeds from Mr. Sir’s water truck. Even though Magnet stole the seeds from the truck, Stanley showed his bravery by taking the blame and consequence for them falling in the hole.(Sachar 89 ) Stanley risked his life driving the water truck to go after his friend Zero. Since he cares about Zero and wants to feel wanted, he did whatever it took to catch him. (Sachar 147 ) At the end of the novel, Stanley’s family isn’t cursed anymore because of he became a hero.
