Higson’s represents the novel the dead the two characters, Jack and Ed as leaders but throughout a discussion is on between a question, are leaders born or made? Ed is believed to be a born leader whereas Jack is made a leader under pressure and steps up. Although I believe leaders can be born and made they are both a leader.
Ed throughout shows his leadership skills with the group and proving he is not a coward under pressure, this is showed at the stadium with the group of boys at the stadium on “Ed pushed past them, shaking his head, determined he isn’t a coward.” (p. 275) Ed is standing up for himself with many criticisms that he has been a coward throughout. This proves that even though he is presumed to be a born leader he cannot be the biggest leader at times, so it does not matter what way he became a leader he got criticism.

Jack’s authoritative figure in the beginning of Lord of the Flies is one quality that shows how he is a dynamic character. To begin with, Jack shows he is authoritative by sabotaging Ralph’s integrity and rules. For instance, on pages one-hundred and one and one-hundred and two, Jack says, “We don’t need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter? It’s time some people knew they’ve got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us.” Jack is trying to get rid of the idea that the conch, or freedom of speech, is needed. This is another step away from civilized behavior because a newly established order of power replaces the conch. Another way Jack shows he is authoritative is by wanting to be a leader. First, Jack forms his own group that he calls the hunters. Then, Jack intimidates the other boys to join his group by talking about the beast. First of all, was when the idea of having a chief was brought forth in the first meeting, the narrator stated that Jack arrogantly nominated himself. Speaking of designating chief, when the idea of voting for a chief was brought forth he protested it. This presented his true intentions of being a leader, self-fulfillment and pride. Nonetheless, in seek for the thrill of power Jack actually preyed on them; for example, everyone got a piece of meat from Jack's first hunt, except for Piggy, the hunter wanted to leave the younger child in doubt. In the eighth chapter, Jack twisted Ralph's words about the hunters, attempting to sway them on his side, rather than the actual chief. Also, he attempted a coup and forming an alternate group. Plus, when confronted by Ralph in the eleventh chapter, he stabbed him and eventually tried to hunt him down wishing to kill him, attempting to affirm himself as the "true" leader. What comes to mind when someone hear the words “born leader”? Certainly, one thinks of a person with the qualities of passion, integrity, confidence, and intelligence. Since the beginning of civilization, born leaders, through their actions, have been able to greatly impact their environment. Shi Huangdi, Siddhartha Gautama, and King Hammurabi are just a few examples of specific leaders in early civilizations that left legacies that have lasted for centuries. Overall, individuals in the past had such amazing leadership skills that they were able to shape the times in which they lived.
Lastly, consequences that have been earned from greed such as isolation have pushed Jack and Macbeth away from their society. Leadership can be defined as the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of a minor or group and persuade them to follow a particular course of action. A leader sets a course of action and ensures that everyone follows the action. Leading can apply to leading oneself, other individuals, groups, organizations and societies. The nature of how leading is done depends on the framework of the situation, one's point of view, and on the nature and needs of those involved. While leadership is learned, the skills and knowledge processed by the leader are influenced by their traits, such as beliefs, values, ethics, and most importantly character. Knowledge and skills directly relate to the process of leadership, while the other qualities give the leader certain characteristics that make them unique. Leaders can come from anyone in society today. They can merely come from a neighborhood kid picking up trash around the neighborhood to the hardship of being a cop on a high-speed chase. Most importantly leaders can either be well-known or barely known. They all exemplify the same characteristics. The role of leadership is greatly portrayed in all three stories of Beowulf, Oedipus the King, and Antigone.
However, this is mainly because of the authoritarian stance on leadership that Jack takes, as opposed to Ralph’s more democratic, warm but firm stance. According to Peter Economy, “The very best leaders are a source of positive energy”. The boys heed Jack’s commands because he’s a force to be reckoned with, not someone they respect. For instance, Jack yells at the choir to raise their hands, and “with dreary obedience” they do so (Golding 23). The boys respond to Jack’s commands, but they do so in fear, afraid of what Jack may do otherwise. On the other hand, you have Ralph, someone who the boys respect on a personal level and as a leader. When Ralph states that the group is going to eventually be rescued, “The simple statement, unbacked by any proof but the weight of Ralph’s new authority, brought light and happiness” (Golding 37). When Ralph makes a statement, the boys feel a sense of comfort emanating from it because they respect him on a personal level. Becoming a leader is never an easy task. It is complex with rational decision making and accepting responsibility for those decisions. Being the leader, does not mean that you always make the best choice, but it does mean you learn and grow from all you experiences. Sometimes becoming a leader is not a choice, but a responsibility that you inherit. Leaders are not born, but are created through trial and error. A true leader cares for his subordinate and will always respect, listen, and mentor them, but a true leader will also discipline correct subordinates when needed. Sometimes a leader needs to depend on his faith and look to a higher power, so that he can make choices with guidance.
