High School Start Times

Getting up early for school has been an issue that multiple generations have had to deal with. School start times are extremely early and have multiple negative effects on young adolescents today. It can cause disorganization, stress, and even suicidal thoughts. Students who are in clubs, play sports, have jobs, and do other activities outside of school have even more responsibilities that lead to additional stress. Balancing all of these extracurriculars with little to no sleep can be detrimental to a teenagers physical and mental health. Later school start times have positively affected young adolescents reducing behavioral problems and mental health issues.
Obtaining the correct amount of sleep that is necessary for executive function is nearly impossible today. It is recommended that young adults get at least eight hours of sleep per night. School is a very important aspect in young adults’ life, if it is college or high school, succeeding can greatly benefit them in the long run. It is only fair that they get a chance to do their best, and to do their best, sleep is necessary. Making school start times later would allow students and teachers to come to school refreshed and energized and ready to take on the day.
