Heroes in Society: Inspiring and Perseverant There is more to a hero than the superficial man in spandex with a cape saving the world. A hero needs to contain certain traits including selflessness, courage, persistence and inspiration to have a lasting impact for the better on society. In Greek mythology, heroes need to complete many tasks without failing; they have to persevere through the obstacles that are thrown their way. Real life heroes such as Gandhi have also faced challenges, but they met the challenges with new concepts and ideas such as nonviolence, which inspired other great leaders over the world such as Martin Luther Jr. All heroes share many traits that are showcased in their journey. Because of the superficial heroes in works of fiction, many people believe that all heroes are perfect. For example, Superman does not contain or exhibit many flaws or any at all, therefore considered an embodiment of perfection. Without his powers and physical strength, he would not be much of a hero, unless he developed certain traits that would brand him as one. When a hero is born perfect, they are not able to go through a journey of self-realization. Numerous people also consider all celebrities as heroes simply because of their fame whereas fame is really the recognition that a hero receives, not the foundation for their traits and personality. For instance, Kanye West receives a great deal of attention because of his self-righteous attitude and conceit, but he has not inspired many people into accomplishing great things. On every occasion he gets, he makes a remark about his own greatness, such as when he said that he “is a close high” (Cleveland) to god. Confidence and cockiness are two very different concepts. There is a fine line of distinction between perseverance and pushing people out of the way to get to the top. He only criticizes people and does not build them up. Helen Taussig overcame a never-ending list of obstacles that came her way that included gender inequality, hearing loss, dyslexia, the loss of her mother, to fulfil her passion of medicine and save millions of babies through her treatment for Blue Baby Syndrome. She possessed passion and drive to overcome gender inequality. She attended “Harvard Medical School and Boston University but was denied a degree at both because she was a woman” (Lowell Milken Center) but still, she went on to Johns Hopkins where she received her MD. She found a way around every challenge and accomplished various life-saving deeds. After her major efforts to overcome gender inequality and acquiring the goals that she had set, Taussig retired from Johns Hopkins, but went on with studying science and soon after, “received the Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson” (U.S. National Library of Medicine). Taussig went through a countless number of hurdles thrown her way, but she handled them with bravery and spirit. Even her death was during getting justice over gender equality as she passed away in a tragic car accident on her way to vote with her friends at a time when women were slowly getting their freedoms.
