A Midsummer Night’s Dream, penned by the acclaimed author William Shakespeare, demonstrates erratic relationships in the form of a romantic comedy. The play takes place in ancient Athens where Theseus, duke of Athens, and his fiancé, Hippolyta, prepare for their grand wedding. During the preparations, Theseus must settle a dispute between a man named Eugeus and his daughter, Hermia. Hermia desires to marry a charming young man by the name of Lysander, however, her father forces her to wed Demetrius. Throughout the story, Hermia and many other women, battle with their love affairs. She exemplifies her strengths in one occurrence by standing up to her father’s wishes concerning her wedding. Speaking to her father, Hermia proclaims, “So will I grow, so live, so die, my lord, ere I will yield my virgin patent up unto his lordship whose unwished yoke my soul consents not to give sovereignty” (I.i.81-84). Hermia demonstrates immense courage and strength by standing up to her father and threatening to pursue the occupation of a nun for the rest of her life. This persistence in marrying the love of her dreams, Lysander, shows incredible courage that resonates throughout the play. Here, Hermia exhibits boundless courage and strength and from now on, her vigor only grows stronger. Later on in the play, knowing that the rules of Athenian law of marriage did not apply outside of Athens, Hermia and Lysander snuck out of the city. As Hermia and Lysander conversed alone, Hermia demands, “Nay, good Lysander. For my sake, my dear, lie further off yet. Do not lie so near” (II.ii.47-48) when Lysander desires to draw nearer to Hermia. By this point, Hermia battled her father and contains immeasurable mental strength. At this instance, Hermia gains greater moral strength when she resisted Lysander’s inappropriate love. She demonstrates one of her strengths when she defends her young Indian boy from Oberon. Oberon pleads, “I do but beg a little changeling boy to be my henchman” and Titania replied, “And for her sake I do rear up her boy, and for her sake I will not part with him…We shall chide downright if I longer stay” (II.i.123-150). With her promise to protect the Indian boy, Titania, willing to fight Oberon over the ownership of her new son, keeps the young changeling boy safe. Willing to fight her husband in order to keep a young boy safe shows immense courage and strength that Titania possess. She also shows great strength when she put aside her anger against Oberon and invites him into the forest. Titania graciously ask Oberon, “If you will patiently dance in our round and see our moonlight revels, go with us” (II.i.145-146). Though angry with Oberon, Titania demonstrates great strength by graciously inviting him to stay with her in the forest and dance with the other fairies even after their fight over the Indian boy.
