A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play of conflicted love. Thus semi-comedy displays the notion of, the spiritual and natural world working together. The play begins with a noble family discussing a planned marriage. Hermia is arranged to marry a man she does not love. In rebellion she and her lover (Lysander) flees to the woods so they can avoid Athenian law. Before leaving Hermia tells her sister about her plans to run away. In desire to gain revenge and find love herself Helena (Hermia’s sister) chases Hermia and her intended mate into the woods. Played by Christy Czajkowski, I thoroughly enjoy her acting. I personally felt like her character was realistic and comical. She had the ability to project her voice and be open to the audience while still portraying a “closed” emotion such as discouragement. In addition Christ y used her props very well. She glasses gave a good support to her character and the portrayal of her character. She showed true feelings of envy, discouragement, pride, and happiness. I am always supporting the underdog and in this play Helena I the one with the lesser advantage. I appreciate the fact that she got the man she wanted in the end. Helena was the younger sister of Hermia. It often bothered her that her sister got all the attention, and she even want it. Helena was madly in love with Demetrius, However Demetrius was arranged to marry Hermia. Thanks to the mistakes of Puck (the fairy) and simply fate, the next morning she finds the both men are in love with her. At first Helena is confused and offended by the actions of the men, however seeing the frustration of her sister, she becomes proud that the love tables have turned. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a Shakespearian comedy where Shakespeare shows many forms of passion. There are many passions shown many times in this play that would change the whole story if they were taken out. It is a trait that can reveal a person’s strong inner emotions such as in this story, friendship, love and jealousy. Helena shows a deep passion for friendship with Hermia when she thinks she has been betrayed, Titania passionately loves Bottom, and Oberon genuinely shows jealousy towards the Indian boy Titania tended to.
Lysander tells Theseus that Demetrius "Made love to … Helena, And won her soul.” Helena says that before Demetrius looked upon Hermia, "He hail'd down oaths that he was only mine.” In an attempt to win back some of Demetrius's affection, Helena tells him of Hermia's plan to meet in the wood and elope with Lysander.
Helena is insecure whereas Hermia is a fighter. Hermia demonstrates that she is a fighter when she does not back down for her and Lysander's love. "So is Lysander," says Hermia (1:1:57), is how she reacts to Theseus' comment about how she must marry Demetrius because her father owns her and that Demetrius is also a wonderful gentleman. Helena, on the other hand, is very insecure as demonstrated in act 2, scene 2, line 749-754, where she says "Happy is Hermia, wheresoe'er she lies; For hath blessed and attractive eyes. How came her eyes so bright? Not with salt tears: If so, my eyes are oftener wash'd than hers. No, no, I am as ugly as a bear; For beasts that meet me run away with fear." Comparing herself to Hermia and saying how she's ugly as a bear, shows how she thinks of herself and the reason for being rejected by Demetrius. This quote is one of Puck’s many monologues in the play. In this quote, Puck is talking out loud as he is sprinkling the love potion on Lysander, who he believes to be Demetrius. When Lysander wakens the effects of the love potion creates conflict between him and Demetrius, and also between him and Helena and Hermia. Infatuation causes Helena to lose all sense of dignity, as can be seen when in the woods, she desperately pleads with Demetrius to ?but treat me as your spaniel?. Here, Helena also becomes irrational, obsessed with pursuing Demetrius, though it is obvious that Demetrius is fixated on winning Hermia?s hand in marriage. Helena?s infatuation also causes her to see things from a skewed perspective, for she falsely believes that when she divulges Hermia?s plans for eloping with Lysander, Demetrius? love for Helena will rekindle. As the audience, we know that the most probable course of action for Demetrius upon hearing such news is to pursue Lysander and Hermia, or to report them to Theseus or Egeus. Clearly, infatuation has clouded Helena?s ability to think clearly, and she sees things in her own idealistic way.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens as Theseus, Hippolyta and Philostrate are together discussing the wedding between Theseus and Hippolyta. Thesus complains about how their wedding is four long days away but Hippolyta counters and says that the days are going to go quickly and they will be married very soon. At this point it is obvious to see that Theseus is very excited for the wedding and Hippolyta is not as thrilled. They continue to discuss their wedding and their life after they get married, telling Philostrate and presumably the other guests present to leave. Love plays a very significant role in this Shakespearian comedy, as it is the driving force of the play: Hermia and Lysander’s forbidden love and their choice to flee Athens is what sets the plot into motion. Love is also what drives many of the characters, and through readers’ perspectives, their actions may seem strange, even comical to us: from Helena pursuing Demetrius and risking her reputation, to fairy queen Titania falling in love with Bottom. However, all these things are done out of love. In conclusion, A Midsummer Night’s Dream displays the blindness of love and how it greatly contradicts with reason.

The four lovers run away to the woods outside of Athens. In the woods, a world of fairies dwell. The fairy king, Oberon, stumbles across Demetrius and Helena while Helena is begging Demetrius to love her. Since Oberon is having some problems with love on his own, he tries to help Helena with her unfortunate situation. He sends his jester, Puck, to use a flower that, if its juice is dropped onto someone who’s sleeping’s eyes, will make the person fall madly in love with the first person they lie their eyes on. “Take thou some of it, and seek through this grove; A sweet Athenian lady is in love with a disdainful youth; anoint his eyes; but do it when the next thing he espies may be the lady. Thou shalt know the man by the Athenian garments he hath on.”(64) Puck, following Oberon’s orders, finds Lysander and Hermia instead of Demetrius and Helena. Demetrius received no love from Hermia who he wanted to pursue, therefore he does not have perfect happiness. At the time when Demetrius can still make rational choices of who he loves, he loves Hermia instead of Helena. In order to pursue Hermia, Demetrius requested Hermia’s father Egeus to marry to her, but she never take Demetrius as a consideration. With all of Demetrius’ efforts, Hermia totally ignores him. Compare to Lysander and Hermia’s inseparable relationship, Demetrius is unhappy by staying alone. The person he loves does not love him, and the person he does not love loves him. Demetrius is a person who knows what he wants. Throughout the play, he loves Hermia consistently until the fairy put a spell on his eyelid.
The relationship between Demetrius and Hermia is problematic, in that Demetrius is seeking the affections of Hermia, while she is in love with Lysander. However, Hermia’s father approves of Demetrius and tries to force her to marry him, but Hermia refuses because of her love for Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 1.1.22-82). Lysander points out the flaw in the situation through this comment, “You have her father 's love, Demetrius –/Let me have Hermia 's. Do you marry him,” (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 1.1.93-94). The second flawed relationship is between Lysander and Helena, as a result of an enchantment put on Lysander that made him fall in love with Helena. Helena does not want the affections of Lysander, but rather the love of Demetrius, and believes that Lysander is taunting her. In addition, this relationship creates tensions because Hermia is in love with Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2.2.109-140). Helena appears to be a more timid,quiet,low self-esteem,whinny and a girl with zero confidence. Hermia is the complete opposite of Helena because she is lough,arrogant,headstrong,bold and a girl with a lot of confidence. Hermia's personality traits are first shown in act 1 scene 1 when Theseus questions her obedience to her father and when he persuades her to think about Demetrius in which Hermia stands her ground and refuses to obey either her father or even the Duke of Athens Theseus. This shows the arrogant,bold side of Hermia as she won’t listen to the two men and is also taking a big risk just show she can be with Lysander. It can also be argued that Hermia displayed a lot of confidence in this scene, because back then where the plays time setting is supposed to take place,it took a lot of guts for people, especially women to argue and refuse to listen to the Duke back then. On the other hand, Helena has shown the opposite of each of these personalities that are possessed by Hermia. Helena is shown be a lot different because, during the first act and scene,she is shown to pout when Hermia calls her fair as a compliment and greeting.She is shown to have a low self-esteem by the fact that just because Demetrius likes Hermia more than her, she comes to the conclusion that she is inferior to the smaller girl. "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" is a comedy combining elements of love, fairies, magic, and dreams. This play is a comedy about five couples who suffer through love’s strange games and the evil behind the devious tricks. This play begins as Theseus, the Duke, is preparing to marry Hippolyta. He woos her with his sword. Hermia is in love with Lysander. Egeus, Hermia’s father, forbids the relationship with Lysander and orders her to marry Demetrius. Demetrius loves Hermia, but she does not love him. On the other hand, Helena is in love with Demetrius. To settle the confusion, Theseus decides that Hermia must marry Demetrius or become a nun. In retaliation to her father’s command, Hermia and Lysander run away together. Amidst all the problems in the human world, Titania and Oberon, the fairy queen and king, continually argue about their various relationships that they have taken part in. (Scott 336) Titania leaves Oberon as a result of the arguments. Oberon is hurt and wants revenge on Titania. So he tells Puck, Oberon’s servant, to put a magic flower juice on her eyelids while she is sleeping. This potion causes the victim to desperately in love with the first creature that they see. Oberon’s plan is carried out, but the potion is also placed on Lysander’s eyes. Lysander awakes to see Helena, who is aimlessly walking through the woods, and instantly falls in love with her. She thinks that he is making fun of her being in love with Demetrius, so she leaves and Lysander follows. This leaves Hermia to wake up alone. Puck now has journeyed to the area where several actors are rehearsing. He uses his magic to turn one of them into a donkey, in hopes that Titania will awake to see it.
