With the twists and turns that comes with life I was not able to start graduate school right away. A month after moving I landed a position with an organization that was totally opposite of my degree field. Very interesting field, but not interesting enough for me not to continue to reach for my dreams. While taking the Health Care Administration course, I intend to receive the preparation a professional needs to manage, lead and improve the shifting health care system. I also intend for this class to improve my efforts, to meet the needs of the vigorous health care system, and to emphasize socially appropriate patient-centered service delivery systems. After completing this course I hope to take away leadership skills, more knowledge on the meticulous rules and regulations of health care setting, and how to handle problems that arise and are significant challenges for health administrators at a variety of levels. My journey to higher education spans 24-years and combines two passions, teaching and EMS (emergency medical services). This journey began in 1986 with a suburban kindergarten class of 25 in Memphis, TN. Eleven years later no longer am I teaching school-age children; instead, I am delivering training programs to EMS providers as well as the medical community. Reflecting back on the all the information learned this semester, I am amazed at how much I learned. Working in healthcare makes you aware of a lot of the topics that were covered, however, when you apply it to yourself, in a personal relationship, it becomes much more powerful what the impact of each topic is.
When I started this Master of Public Health (MPH), I had great expectations, and I knew that I had to do it because it would help me progress as a health care professional (Roehampton-online.com, 2015). I was coming in with an experience both as an International Volunteer Leader in a Relief Organization for the past 20 years and with an experience in health care as a visiting nurse, additionally being the president of the Staff Committee. The Module One of the MPH has helped me tremendously in bringing together both angles of experience and showed me how to blend them in order to improve my leadership and feel more secure in both my roles as it is very important to be confident while leading (Barron Stark, 2012).

There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Since I started College in 2004, I focused on taking as many science classes as possible. I wanted to stay in medical field, I never thought of myself being in the business field. I used to think medical field would open the door to many secured jobs in pharmacy and dentistry. In 2007, my mom had a severe stroke. After taking two years off from school to take care of my mom, my goal changed. Going back to school, I wanted a degree which I could find a job right when I get out of school and while waiting to get into pharmacy school. My choices of pharmacy schools were narrow down to in state schools only. I was lucky to be introduced to Health Care Management by a friend. Health Care Management sounded attractive to me because I always wanted to work in the health care field. I was not sure I was born to be a manager. I had experience with project management working for a private law firm for two years but not people management. A few years ago, I took the class “how to deal with difficult people” at Community College of Aurora because I doubted my communication skill. I never thought I would be a good communicator. In middle school, writing in Vietnamese was one of my strengths, I even wanted to be a journalist when I grow up but when writing in English, it is one of my weaknesses. The first semester starting Health Care Management courses; I took four health care management classes at a time. That was my best semester because I got to take a break from taking science classes. Two years ago, I was writing my letter of intent for my application to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Healthcare Administration revealing my failures, and most significantly, that I lost my passion and didn’t know where to start. I also conceded that I was relatively unaware of the field of Public Administration (PA). Little did I know, examining PA theories would enable me to connect the final dots in the big picture of my life, where I came from, who I’d come to be, what choices I’d made, the relationships I nurtured, and my dreams and desires for the future. Although confidence came slowly and awkwardly, I discovered my desire to contribute to the advancement of public health policies. I am writing to express my interest in continuing to the Doctoral program in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
