All About Ironclads and the Battle of Hampton Roads

Have you heard of the term ‘Ironclads’? Probably not, due to it being a term not often used in modern day. Ironclads are, in fact, ships reinforced, or even made, with iron (hence the name). Modern day officers describe these ships as ‘common battleships’ or ‘old timers’, but about 155 years ago, ironclads were the most powerful and feared warships of the sea. At the time, they were the peak of innovation and revolutionized the ship’s efficiency.
The first functional ironclad was made a few years before the Civil War and it was not even made by the Americans. This ship is called La Gloire which was made by the French in 1859. Soon afterwards, the British constructed their own ironclad and, by 1862, both countries had more than ten iron ships. The first battle of ironclads was the famous battle of Hampton Roads. This boat had quite an interesting design. It was made so that the hull was almost completely submerged, so much so that the sides peeked only a few inches above the water. The whole boat was completely made of iron unlike the CSS Virginia which had the wooden hull. The turret of the Monitor, was revolutionary as well. Although there was only two cannons, the turret was designed in such a way that it could rotate 360 degrees. This means that the turret can turn to shoot anywhere. There is no hiding from the Monitor, it has no blind spots. On top of having a full iron defence, being almost completely submerged, and a turret that has 360 vision, the USS Monitor was the first ship to have an underwater toilet (or restroom). This way, the soldiers were able to relieve themselves in the midst of battle to stay comfortable while the enemy had to hold their bladders and sometimes even soak their pants.
