The Haitian Community The word community is defined as a group of individuals residing in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. We all, whether we know this or not, belong to particular communities and even sub communities (self contained community within an unusually large area). One particular community that I've been a part of during my entire life is the Haitian community. An Haitian Community is usually a place where a group of Haitian nationals reside, we share many cultural beliefs and practices together. In this paper I will be investigating some of the beliefs and practices of the Haitian Community. I asked a series of questions about the community and they gave me their views. The first person I interviewed was Sheena Saintil, sheena was also born and still is a current member of the Haitian community. I asked her what did she think were the advantages of living in the Haitian community, She said that she couldn't think of one of the top of her head. After several minutes she responded that the advantages of living in a Haitian community was the fact that it pushed you to get out of the community, she also said that the parents were also very stern and as a result the children get into less trouble. I then asked her about the disadvantages of living in the community, she had a lot to say. She responded to the question by saying that one of the biggest disadvantage of the community was jealousy. The people in the community are very jealous and hateful causing the community to not evolve to something better. She also said that majority of the men in the community were very abusive which brought me to ask her the question whether or not that abuse was a problem and the Haitian community. She said that she firmly believe that domestic violence is a huge problem in the community and that it was affecting the community in a negative manner. So I did a survey asking members of the community what did they appreciate the most about the community. The most popular answer received was the music, others were things like food, brother and sister hood ect. I decided to explore Haitian music. As everyone know music have the power to bring us together whether it be in times of joy or even in times of sadness. kompa, is a dance music and modern méringue in Haiti with European and African roots.The genre was popularized following the 1955 creation of the band Conjunto International by Nemours Jean-Baptiste (Wikipedia).
