Gun Violence Reflection

On Wednesday, Oct 7, the theme that stood out to me was generosity and gun violence. As we got into groups and discussed our service sites, it became apparent how important our actions have onto others. For example, we discussed different perspectives of how we conducted our services and how we made an impact. For that reason, this reminded me of when I conducted volunteer work at an elementary school. I helped to facilitate Halloween by helping the kids have a joyous and violent free trick or treating. In addition, this helped the kids focus on having fun and not having to worry about the gun violence that plaque’s their neighborhood. While viewing the documentary of Serbia, Otpor, which is led by Srdja, is an activist group promoting non-violence to bring down the oppressive regime of Slobodan. Using effective methods of peaceful protesting have united all the people of Serbia to take action and to take over the country. Thus, this reminds me of the Martin Luther King Jr. movement that led thousands of individuals to fight for the equality of minorities and allowed them to have the basic human freedoms. Furthermore, this movement was successful in promoting a positive message and bringing down the oppression that was being used through peaceful methods to achieve equality for everyone regardless of race. Thus, the issue that is being raised is how oppressive regimes use violence to silence opposition and thus will use everything at their disposal to keep the people in an oppressive state. As a result, this illuminates peace, justice and conflict resolution by using peaceful protesting. This illuminates the core principle of acquiring peace. In addition, justice can be achieved by using the peaceful methods to propel the agenda in which is desired to acquire justice and equality for all.
