Gun control is a controversial topic in today’s society. Some people believe that guns should get taken away from citizens completely, while others say there should just be tighter laws. Nicholas Kristof has been a journalist and writer since 2001, and a winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. In 2017, Kristof wrote the article “How to Reduce Shootings”. Kristof have three main points, the first point was that stricter gun laws lowered homicide rates. The second point was how there is a lack of research on guns. The last point he made was the mass shootings are not the main cause of loss of life. The article has been held up by liberals because the article argues that fewer guns will cause fewer deaths, however, the article has a number of critics who argue that the article doesn’t focus on the safety of Americans. but that is not true. Two of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history have occurred in the span of the last 6 months. Kristof explains that mass shootings are what get the most attention so it is believed that they are the main cause of gun deaths in the United States. Mass shootings only make up about 1.2% of gun deaths in the U.S. due to large amount of suicides and homicides which make up the rest of the recorded gun deaths in the United States.
Kristof makes a lot of good points in his article “How to reduce shootings”. I agree with Kristof's statement that a right type of training could go a long way because I hear of to many gun deaths due to not proper training. A study showed that 79% of gun deaths happen with an illegally obtained gun. Kristof thought of the solution, that if gun owners were trained how to properly keep their guns in a safe place then the percentage of illegally obtained guns would go down.
