We all know someone who is a single parent or someone who is raised by a single parent. It’s almost inevitable considering the high percentage of single mothers, and fathers, in the United States. As of 2016, twenty-seven percent of all children in the US live with only one parent. Myself being raised by my mother alone, I have a bit of insight on why growing up with a single mom is one of the biggest problems facing youth today.
Before we delve into anything, I wanted to set one thing straight. I intentionally said growing up with a single mom versus growing up with a single dad for two reasons. First off, of that twenty-seven percent, only four percent are single fathers. Secondly, the pay gap between men and women sadly still exists. Parenting alone is extremely difficult whether you are a dude or a gal, my only point is that women often face that extra obstacle of not making enough. Any free time that she did have was spent working early mornings or late nights. This often left me feeling abandoned, angry, and lonely. So how does this impact the youth? Well, it seems be a domino effect and the correlation between fatherless homes and behavioral issues is astounding. According to the Center for Disease Control, eighty-five percent of children who suffer from behavior disorders do not have a father in the picture. Could this be because these kids feel like they don’t get enough attention at home, so they seek it out by acting out in school and experimenting with drugs? According to the National Principals Association report, seventy-one percent of all high school dropouts live with just their mother.
