The Frontline video "Growing Up Online" (2008) was a trip down memory lane for me. I was a senior in high school in 2008, and the internet age took off during those years. Practically every child had a Myspace account which later progressed to Facebook. Many people spent majority of their free time updating their profile and connecting with others. Just like the video stated, “the internet is a place for self-expression,” it can be an escape from reality for others. As social media became popular, this was the beginning of a new generation. Parents were now on the fence on what type of internet boundaries they should apply towards their children. Regardless of a person’s age, seven out of ten Americans currently use social media websites as a form of entertainment, to receive news, and to connect with others (“Social Media Fact Sheet,” 2017). One of the issues associated with this new generation is that people are superficial and don’t form personable relationships that they once did. In the Frontline video, some people cared more about the quantity of friends they had online and cared less about the quality of their friendships. It is ironic how connected we are yet, we are still disconnected. Sometimes people form relationships online with people that they never met offline. This is risky because we never truly know the persons intention, and children are especially vulnerable to this type of behavior. Schools are making it a priority to warn parents and their kids about cyberbullying risks. Children are very personable and other’s opinions of them matter. While some may argue that cyberbullying is worse than regular bullying, both are detrimental to a child’s mental health. According to School Crime Supplement, from the years 2014-2015, statistics reported that 21% of students ages from 12-18 experienced some form of cyberbullying. These behavior ranges from making threats against a person, spreading rumors, sharing embarrassing information or others forms of humiliation. It can cause some students to have lower self-esteem or it can cause them to commit suicide. I personally think that cyberbullying is going to get worse in the future.
