I’ve been blessed to grow up in an upper-class community where everyone will do everything in their power to help others. I feel as if growing up in this community has taught me the importance of giving back to the community and helping those in need. In all my years, Community service has just been something I’ve always done. For example, with my lacrosse team, I volunteer with a program we created called “Hill 2 Hill”. In this program, we go to less-privileged areas and teach the kids of Roll Hill how to play lacrosse. As well as Hill 2 Hill, my lacrosse team and I occasionally visit the Free Store Foodbank to help sort cans and pack ‘power packs’ which are boxes that give underprivileged kids a full and balanced meal. I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
Finally I feel like I show service, which is the act of assistance, through my community service. I helped the school with the school play my freshman and sophomore years, working concession stands whenever I am able to, and helping the technology department at the school over the summer. I also help in other places in the community. For example every year I try to help put on a thanksgiving dinner for those in need with my church. This skill will help me throughout my life because it shows how important it is to help others.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have even begun to imagine that community service could be such a rewarding experience. As the oldest child I never had the opportunity of having someone that could help me with my homework, play with me and help me when I needed something. My parents once in a while could help me with homework, but once we moved to the United States I was definitely on my own considering my parents didn’t know enough English to help me. From this moment forward, I can say I’m very proud of myself for being where I am now without any help throughout my school years. Yet, I know I could have done better with the help of someone. I figured with the opportunity to do community service, I could take advantage of this situation and choose something that would help kids with whatever they needed and maybe even play with them if I had the chance.
In community service I some things I’ve done have been work in restoring Evergreen Cemetery and working in The Ronald McDonald House. In working in Evergreen we mostly work to clear the overgrown cemetery. There are many groups that participate in this, such as ASPiRE, Into The Streets, off campus groups and even military groups so you meet a lot of people doing this. It’s pretty straight forward work, clearing the vines and plants from the cemetery and gravesites. But sometimes we need help clearing some particularly tough or difficult piece of the vegetation and we had to work together and far as leadership, for the most part there
Community service is a voluntary, unpaid act of kindness that an individual perform to benefit and help others who are in need. It is important for individuals to do community services. It is not only about helping the community but, also making a difference in someone’s life. It can help a person grow and build connections mentally, physically, and emotionally. Mentally, a person who does community service is able to change their perspective of the world and appreciate the things they have. Physically, it can help a person be more motivated and explore what is going on in their community. Emotionally, it can help a person feel kindness therefore, it can also help an individual interact with others, build a relationship, and further their communication. Developing children’s leadership is important to the community because these children are the future of America. These children will become teachers, government officials, lawyers, doctors among many careers. By helping build the Purple Martin House I am protecting the ecosystem which we all share. If we continue ignoring our ecosystem it will cause harm to all of us on the planet Earth. By volunteering in my church’s nursery I a help the community by taking care of people’s toddlers. I always devote myself to helping others as much as I can. I suppose I attribute being a part of such a tight-knit family as my own to play a significant role in my desire to help others in their times of need, as my family has always done for each other. When I first moved to the US from India, my parents and I had very less. Through the help of others, we were able to have decent furniture and appliances. Today, we are not in this position. Today, We are able to give back to the community everything we received and more! As a member of the Keyettes, I am able to do something I love, which is serving the community. When people learn how many hours of community service I have done, they ask "Why bother if you aren't going to get paid?". My answer is always "It's something I enjoy doing". Community service has been a way for me to give back, meet new people, and create experiences that I will always treasure. I spend a lot of my time going to camps, libraries, and nursing homes as a certified therapy dog handler and I spend my weekends and summer working with kids at my Church. In school, I am the president of the Humane Society and am in charge of small drives to give to our local animal shelter. I met some nurses and doctors who often go the extra mile to help others. I saw a nurse once stay late to accommodate a working parent and a doctor who paid for a homeless person’s prescription. I personally want to become this kind of valuable person who gives back to the community. When we give back to others, they give back to us in different ways.
To me, service is not just using up time, but feeling, a life lesson, or even life lessons in itself, like concepts learned only through hands-on experience. There is something so different, so unique that comes with giving back to one’s community. Maybe it is the satisfaction of helping those who may otherwise receive less help. Maybe it is seeing people from all around the world, smile with that same smile of appreciation and gratitude. Or perhaps it is knowing that I have a sensitivity to others that is only gained through serving, or knowing that giving back to the community has made my life richer and more meaningful. I have demonstrated my dedication to community service by being part of service clubs, organizing volunteer activities, and volunteering at places that I feel are disregarded. I am a part of two service clubs; National Honor Society (NHS) and Interact. In NHS I was the communications officer or historian for a year. I would inform students of upcoming volunteer activities, and I would get them to volunteer. Some volunteer activities I participated in for NHS were park cleanups, beach cleanups, and fundraisers. As Secretary of the Debate Club of my high school, I was assigned the job of picking a community service project for the Club to participate in. I used to hate community service. I only did it if it was a requirement for graduation or for a program. Even when I did community service, I still waited until the very last opportunity to do it.
