It’s important to understand the role they play and the responsibility they share through the onslaught of marketed messages we absorb everyday, so that as a community we can make informed decisions.

This last thought led me to seriously think about which area of design I should be researching for, and unless an opportunity arises for a graphic illustrator position soon after graduation, I foresee me doing freelance work. With this in mind I started looking into what being a freelancer entails, which led me to an article titled, ‘So, You Want a Creative Job?’ (Karjaluoto, 2012)

I have had two part-time jobs involving computer related work, in which I have been able to bring art influences into. When working for Retail Futures, an e-commerce company based in Malvern, I designed their corporate image, and websites for clients such as Coalport and Parcel Force. More recently I have taken another job with a more technical slant, for another e-commerce firm, eplexus. I still do design work, in which I have designed websites and images for "Highwaycode.com", and Anglo Digital a successful venture capitalist firm. Alongside my practical experience, I am also studying Computing at my current college, which aids me to learn the fundamentals of computer usage and programming, an area that I am interested in.

A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field is where a student would start. The most crucial skill for an Interior Designer to have is time management. An Interior Designer can not procrastinate in this field, especially in the commercial area. Commercial designers have a strict deadline to meet since their clients are mostly corporations. Corporations set a project budget for a certain quarter of a year because the design part is expensive and it needs to be planned out ahead of time. Also, the designer may be designing the space for a special event such as a Christmas party, banquet, etc. In their book, Designing Your Future, Beacham, McFall, and Park-Gates state “Contract design is characteristically deadline driven, and clients have high expectations for fast turn-around on designs. This pressure can cause a high level of stress in design offices” (66). This quote illustrates that the main causes of stress in the Interior Design profession are the deadli...

It is an interesting career field, but it is amazing and I wouldn’t trade it. I feel as if I am in a good spot to start at the bottom of any job and work my way up the chain and one day be put in charge.
