For the duration of my high school career, I have always made maintaining my GPA and achieving good grades a top priority. This can be seen in the fact that I am in the top twenty-five percent quartile of my graduating class, and my SAT scores. At the same time, I tried to focus my time beyond just education, but in community involvement. I have participated in numerous clubs and activities during high school; some I have not yet mentioned are powder-puff football, volunteering and fundraising for the class of 2017, and doing different types of community service throughout the years. Coming from such a small school and town, I am very excited to go away to college and have a brand new start. I am hoping that during my four years in college
I believe that being able to assist others is a positive part of life that we all endure. Although we sometimes view service as unnecessary work, it gives me a sense of pride knowing I’m able to volunteer in my community. Being around people who are willing to work hard has affected my life by motivating me to view service as something that will benefit not only the community, but myself and my views on life as well. The first requirement for consideration is an overall outstanding grade point average and the ability to maintain or improve upon that grade throughout my high school career. Throughout my educational career I have always excelled in the classroom. I recently graduated high school, being in the top three percent of my class, all while being a captain in the varsity football team and working full time. My high school GPA was a 4.0, and I received many awards, including First Team All-State for academics. Currently, I have a 3.5 GPA at UTA, while working part time and being involved in various school organizations. At my old high school, I would have had a tough time answering this question. My grade point average was my identity, my community engagement was my passion, and campus leadership drove me to reach higher. While all of these qualities are great, I started to lose focus of my other qualities that mattered the most. This changed at the Governor's School for Science and Math. Here I have learned that self improvement and hard work are my best qualities, and I now use them in other areas of my life, such as activities and community.
Next year, as I embark my first year at university, I hope to fully integrate myself into the community by getting involved in the Students' Union, joining the cheer team, volunteering where I can and making many new friends along the way. At university, I hope to maintain a high grade point average, granted that my education is extremely important to me and that I am extremely ambitious about achieving my goals.Therefore, I will commit lots of my time to my studies in hopes of being a successful student. Nevertheless, I am still looking forward to being a part of the community by devoting my extra time to helping those around me. In classes, I intend on being an active learner, a respectful student, and a helpful classmate; someone who is always willing to lend a hand to others. Through engaging in my community, I hope to bring joy to others around me by spending my time supporting local events, volunteering for fundraisers, and helping plan and organize campus activities.
Some of my extracurricular activities include Science Olympiad, STEM Academy, International Club, Advanced Academics Club, and Chem Club. During high school I have participated in various community-based organizations, the two most common being Beta Club and National Honor Society. However while these clubs have allowed me to give back to my community in numerous ways, it was strangely not either of these clubs that expanded my interest in the following particular social issue. Rather it was my involvement in Science Olympiad, specifically volunteering to help run a local Elementary school tournament, that expanded my view of the STEM field.
At the start of the semester each year, students of all ages are asked the same questions. What kinds of classes are you enrolled in? I am in five AP classes. And? I am also playing varsity volleyball. And? I go to music lessons every Wednesday and Saturday for violin. Well, how about community service? There must come a point when society needs to step back and really focus on the damage that words have on the young mind, and on the fact that children are simply incapable of juggling all of these demands, both physically and mentally. Serving for the community and the school without compensation or recognition is a defining characteristic of the National Honor Society. I believe that I provide plenteous hours of service to my school and community. In my school, I am a member of Interact Club- a club that encourages volunteer work regarding the school and the community. I have participated in many Interact activities such as Make a Difference Day- cleaning trash at the Wildlife Refuge, Martin Luther King Day at Stockton University- helping organizations such as Circle K, and Project Green- cleaning trash and planting at the Atlantic City beach. In addition to these activities, I have volunteered at Seashore Gardens over the summer before my junior year. There, I was able to engage and interact with the elderly by coloring with them, distributing their lunches, and getting to know them. During my first day volunteering there, I had made a friend instantly as we bonded over gossiping and each other’s daytime activities. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. In addition, I volunteered my time by bagging groceries at ShopRite and washing cars to help fundraise for the Absegami girls soccer team as well as making Valentine's Day cards for the elderly, decorating classroom doors for Christmas, and helping my class with a cookie fundraiser. As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. During the past years of my high school career I have participated and received awards in the following: Cheerleading (eight years), twice as captain, '97 -'98 Varsity Letter in Cheerleading, '98 AIM scholar, Who's Who Among American Cheerleaders, and '98 Academic Excellence Award while participating in Virginia High School League Interscholastic Activities. I also belonged to the following clubs: S.A.D.D. club (two years), second year as secretary, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Choir Club, and Computer Club. In the year '99 -'00 I received awards in the following classes: Computer Applications, Spanish I, World Geography, and Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry. I also received an award for Most Encouraging Student. I currently belong to the Hiking and Outdoor Club, Ski Club, Pep Club, and Environmental Awareness Club. In addition, this year I participate in a program called Read With A Friend. In this program I, along with a group of other students, go to the near by elementary school to read to a class of students from kindergarten to fifth grade.

After speaking with Dr. Kelly Sass and Byron Bork about my application this past application cycle, the weakest parts of my application are my GRE score and GPA. We had discussed how they were below average and that re-taking the GRE and taking a graduate-level course would be two good options. While I did work hard and diligently throughout college, always improving my GPA each semester, I knew when I was applying that my science GPA was lower than Iowa’s accepted average. When I first enrolled here at State University, I never thought I would ever be in the position to graduate. Finishing college was a huge goal growing up but it was also my biggest fear. Community service is beneficial in a number of ways. The first reason community service should be mandatory is because for years service learning has been closely correlated with scholastic achievement. The majority of students who engage in community service activities tend to perform slightly better in school than those who do not do any sort of service education. Community service gives students the possibility to take what they do outside the classroom and implement it with the learning they do inside the classroom. Doing service work is a prominent route for students to check what they’ve learned and even add new knowledge. Some would argue that community service is not correlate with scholastic achievement because it adds additional work and stress on a student. Advocates of no mandatory community service believes that an average student already juggle a huge work load.
