Government is defined as “a system by which society is run.” There are many examples of different types of government which exist in our society today. All forms of government have one single purpose: to guide society into a direction, be it considered good or bad. However, society demands a definition of itself to set the page for discussion. Society is defined as a group or an aggregate of people who work in a broad community and are interconnected by any means. Society may be something as complicated as a diverse nation, or it may be something as loose as a drug cartel. These laws help define the morality of a society. Nations all around the world penalize an individual for killing without necessity and penalize another for robbery. This deems murder and pillaging to be immoral. Such actions undertaken by the government keeps those in the society safe. For example, in Lord of the Flies, Jack commands his tribe not to speak to Ralph because he considers Ralph to be a threat to his tribal society. The law of the tribe is to not to talk to Ralph, as he is likely to disband the productive society and cause dissent in Jack’s eyes. Big government with big power, such as Jack and his tribal society in Lord of the Flies, creates more rules and laws to sculpt a strong society, either good or bad. There are those who worry about the loss of individual rights because of the power of a strong government, however, the concession of some rights is necessary for protection, according to John Locke’s Social Contract Theory, where an individual must give up some rights in order for protections guaranteed by the government. The dictatorship of Singapore is nothing short of a strong government. Under Lee Kuan Yew’s regime the economy, HDI, Prosperity Index, and Cleanliness Index increases. The majority of the citizens is happy with their leader, and their leader does right by them. Lee Kuan Yew is a dictator favored amongst many Western nations for his efficiency while rebuilding Singapore from the early British Colonial Period. Singapore is only one of the many strong examples of where society not only survives, but thrives under a strong government. Tribal societies protect our ancestors, corporate societies help deliver better and more efficient products, and organizations such as NASA are able to make discovers due to their strong collaboration with the chain of command. Others may follow the principle of Machiavelli’s The Prince that “all power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” however, a strong government using a system of checks and balances, such as what is seen in the United States and Germany, is able to control those people who value power over what is beneficial for the society.
