Literature Review In the last few decades, the environmentalists become more and more concern about the green concern. (Toke, Gupta and Dandekar, 2012) Also, the increase deterioration of environmental such as global warming, acid rain, toxic substance usage, decrease in non-replenish resources, depletion of raw material, overflowing waste landfills, and pollution in general had gain the awareness from people around the world. (Mutingi, 2013; Toke et al, 2012; Kumar and Chandrakar, 2012) Globalization is one of the factors that cause the increase in environmental deterioration. (Gardas and Narkhede, 2013) It also found out that the environmental pollution is correlated to the industry development and increase in waste or emission based on the environmental concern in the past few decades. (Singhal, 2013; Shakti; Kumar and Chandrakar, 2012) Since the globalization and industry development cause the occurring of environmental problems, it had driven the companies use the Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM). (Mutingi, 2013) GSCM can create a sustainable supply chain since the whole process of producing a product and it will not harm the environment. The input is using the environmental friendly raw material and the output can be reused or recycled. (Patrick, 2010, as cited in Gardas and Narkhede, 2013) Besides that, GSCM also defined as involve the activities such as green procurement, green manufacturing, green distribution and reverse logistics. (Shakti) It can be said that the companies need to go green due to the various agencies, there are government, customer, competitor, and stakeholder. (Jasti, Sharma and Kodali, 2012) In addition, the reason that the companies use the GSCM is it can help the companies to achieve win-win ... ... middle of paper ... ...us assembly components. So, tolerance allocation model is a method that can be used to assist the electronic industry to apply the green principles. This model can be used at the stage of product design and the mathematic calculation (algorithms) is used in this model. Actually, this model considered that how the electronic product can be disassembled and recycled before combine the assembly components to form an electronic product. Since the electronic product is made from various assembly product, a blueprint dimension and tolerance need to be prepared to specific which assembly components is being used to form a electronic product and make sure that the final electronic product can be functioned. The different level of tolerance can make the cost different. It is the way that can let the producer of electronic industry to calculate the cost. (Huang & Tseng, 2010)
The reason because environmental issues were not take in consideration before, in the economic field, was due to the absence of their costs from the calculation of GNI. However, it has to be consider that future growth and in general, quality of life are strongly related to environment. Therefore, environment’s long term implications has to be taken in consideration in the economy.
Supplying eco-friendly products has been on the Walmart agenda since the early 1990s. After a failed first attempt and much criticism, the company decided to try again. In a speech made in October of 2005, CEO of Walmart, H. Lee Scott Jr., declared Walmart would devise a “business sustainable strategy” to reduce the environmental impact the company had. Walmart could not pull this off alone. If they only focused on the confines of themselves, rather than all that they were involved with, it was estimated that they’d only reduce their impact by about 10%. To reach that goal of 100%, Walmart had to involve stakeholders to make networks which achieve sustainability. These networks proved to be vital in not only Walmart’s goal in minimizing its environmental impact, but recovering their reputation, avoiding criticism, saving money, raising awareness, improving customer satisfaction, and creating incentive for other businesses to work towards sustainability.
One way that globalization limits sustainable prosperity is the amount of environmental destruction that occurs in our growing world. For example, a process called shipwrecking is the deconstruction of ships that are no longer able to function properly. The ships are pulled up onto beaches in Bangladesh and are taken apart by workers with blow torches. The ships tend to rust leaving the beaches a reddish orange color. This rust can get into the ocean affecting many other parts of our world. Also, gasses that are produced and released into the environment from the blowtorches help contribute to the already occurring global warming. Another scary fact is that there is nearly one death per day in ship breaking yards, and nearly one quarter of them get some form of cancer due to the harsh chemicals. Ship breaking is a very dangerous job and puts many lives at risk. A big factor that helps wreck the environment is the large manufacturing plants that are located in many different countri...
It is difficult for humans to live in harmony with nature because humans’ selfishness always places profits before our earth’s needs. We live in a consumer society, which we purchase interesting products and dispose of them carelessly. Those products with non-decomposable materials, which make our life easier and more comfortable, result a massive damage to our environment. In the articles, “A Fable for Tomorrow” by Rachel Carson and “Our Animals Rite” by Anna Quindlen, both authors suggest destruction in nature world due to human’s activities. As environment issues presented by scientists, governments around the world start to give highly attention on the environmental protection, but there are many challenges in implementing environmental protection policies. Some of the top environmental concerns are air pollution, climate changing and trash waste. Although people started to aware the horrible consequences due to polluted environment, an efficient life, people apathy toward ecosystem and human's unlimited desires for a confortable life have created obstacles for the world to protect the environment.
Global supply chain management involves the coordination and integration process of information, finances and materials, when they move globally from a supplier to a consumer. This process includes from suppliers to manufacturers to wholesaler to retailer and finally to consumer (Rouse, 2017).
Trade liberalisation could lead to a greater exploitation of the environment due to the increase in demand from global market. Developed countries especially in the Europe rely highly on the natural resources to fuel its economic development . As a result of that, natural resources will be largely exploited for greater production of raw materials from countries with lower environmental laws. The exploitation of the environment also leads to another issue. It is reported that generally, the higher the economic development and the rate of urbanization in a country, the greater the production of solid and hazardous waste which are detrimental to the environment and the natural ecosystems . These wastes are often exported from developed countries known as countries of the Global North to developing countries, known as countries of the Global South. As a result of that, the environment and the health of the people in developing countries could be severely affected by the high concentrations of persistent organic
Supply Chain Management according to Tom Mc Guffog is "Maximising added value and reducing total cost across the entire trading process through focusing on speed and certainty of response to the market." Supply chain management is one of the important area which requiring strategic planning in a business enterprise. Planning and decision making are required right from the production of goods till the goods reach the ultimate consumers in the most cost effective and timely manner. If a firm is able to manage its supply chain efficiently, it can increase its customer satisfaction because SCM ensure the deliverance of fast and quality products to customers. Supply chain includes all the activities from the conversion of raw materials, one end of supply chain to the customers, the other end of the chain, including all associated information flows.
In conclusion, going green in the workplace is catchy new trend. Choosing to go verdant can be a grueling task and one that is confronted with some unique pros and cons. Although making green choices come at a slightly higher price, the rewards that are earned more than cover these costs. When a company chooses wisely going green can not only help the environment, and reduce the carbon foot-print the company makes but it can also prove to be a very smart business decision that can be financially gratifying.
The Great Britain that was the pioneer has since been overtaken by the United States and China. Again, the technological revolution that has characterized the world over the last one century introduced a raft of changes as manufacturers sought cheaper ways of producing goods. Industrialization brought mixed fortunes to the world in that on one hand, and life has been made incredibly easy with a broad range of utilities. On the contrary, industrialization has been criticized for environmental degradation and changing climatic conditions. For half a century now, there have been calls from governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other institutions to introduce measures to curb the adverse effects of industrialization. In the first place, industrialization is the single most contributors to pollution. Such measures are aimed at containing negative impacts of climate change and the problems associated
It has become apparent the effects of globalization has changed the marketplace so much in the past few decades that a much faster response is demanded from producers and their supply chain. This is done by effective supply chain management, which is the integration of key business processes acrosss the supply chain within organisiations. The objective of this is to create a system of best value for the entire supply chain including the consumer. In recent years, many firms have realised the importance of the optimization and streamlining of the supply chain management processes, it has since become the focus for many firms.

Sustainable operation management is a management approach that involves planning, implementation and control of business operations that translate available resources into the required product or service. It is the management of business practices, traditions and operations to promote the highest level of efficiency, smooth workflow, and increased productivity in an organization. This management strategy ensures that the available labour force and materials are changed into products or services in a cost effective way to increase the company’s returns (Corbett, 2009). It also involves production waste management, food waste reduction, creating new opportunities, environment protection, and improving customer health. Sustainable operation management in the retail industry around the world has gained momentum in the recent years, in the face of customer pressure and media interest. It is particularly linked to the concepts of corporate social responsibility and global warming (Morrison, 2013).
Environmental pressures have caused green supply chain management to emerge as an important corporate environmental strategy for organisations’ processes. Our discussion will describe, illustrate and critically evaluate the purchasing process of Woolworths. It will further identify the steps of the purchasing process, the effect of green purchasing and sustainable purchasing. Moreover, the essay will go on to look at the effort that Woolworths has made through their programmes and initiatives of green purchasing.
Important companies like Shell, DuPont, BP has been reorganised to generate profits from this green market of goods and services. In this sense, it may sound altruistic, "the sustainability", the logic of profitability and competition is what will determine the ability of companies of the future to meet the changing needs of consumers.
Economic growth and social development are complementary and they have a close but complex relationship. With the economic growth, it is clear that there are many environmental concerns in today’s society. Air, water, and land pollution have worsened; the environment of wild animals and plants has been seriously damaged; many species are threatened with extinction, deforestation and over-exploitation of mineral resources.
