“Think globally, act locally” stated the billboard on the Pushkin’s Street when I was passing by bus from school to my way home almost 4 years ago. I saw the words every time I was crossing that street. But I have never paid due attention to their meaning.
Whenever you turn on a TV, there is a chance you will see people getting killed by each other, about typhoon claiming lives of hundred people or starting revolution in the Middle East. Just like watching as a teenager, violence meetings in Egypt, exposed use of child labor in India, spread AIDS in Africa made me feel rather heartbroken. But we usually don’t realize how serious the situation is until it comes to us. There is so many things happening around the globe, people just got used to it, and feel it is normal. One would hardly give a minute to think about what is happening in 100 miles away from his town, not talking about what is happening in other continent. We justify ourselves by thinking that we are helpless in this situation.
But do we do anything to invoke a change? Trying to answer on this question I understood the essence of the words on that very same slogan.
Global citizenship is considerably new term, but the concept has been there since antiquity, when Greek people considered themselves as the Citizens of the World and did not connect this idea with belonging to some place. Today, citizenship means the legal right to belong to a particular country. Thinking about “global”, first thing that comes to my mind is a spherical, round object. When it comes to a person, I imagine him to be well-rounded, inquisitive and broad-minded. In other words, he or she accept the role they have been given as a world citizen, are patriotic about their own country but respect div...

A picture of a Global citizen seemed so perfect and ideal to me at first. But now I understand it is never late to learn more about the wider world around me and it is not necessary for one to travel somewhere in order to get a global citizenship. I truly believe that global citizenship begins at home as long as your actions contribute to building your community’s values.
