Global Warming: Not Just a Myth

597 Words2 Pages

You’ve heard it everywhere already, but do you really know what it means? Is it really as bad as people complain it is? I am, of course, talking of global warming. Global warming is dangerous and disastrous, but given enough effort we can stop it. You will find all of this out in the paragraphs that follow.
To start, what is global warming? Is it even real? Many believe that the Earth has not changed at all, and that any science used to prove otherwise is completely false. (Magill) Despite these beliefs, evidence shows that global warming is very much real. But what is it? Global warming is exactly what it sounds like: the whole Earth heating up. This temperature change may only appear to be one or two degrees increased, but this is enough to melt ice and dry up rivers. (Parry) This heat comes from greenhouse gas. In this case, greenhouse gas is CO2, or carbon dioxide. The CO2 comes from the fossil fuels we release into the atmosphere. It is unable to escape into space, and reflects back onto the Earth. The Earth naturally does this on its own, however it has never done so with such a rapid speed before humans began to burn fossil fuels. (The History Channel)
As previously mentioned, temperature increase can melt the ice caps and cause droughts elsewhere. This extreme weather will have devastating effects long term. Droughts means a shortage of water and prices for water will go up. For farmers, this means a smaller harvest. If the ice caps melt, there will be more ocean water. Given enough of the ocean rising, coastal cities and communities will become submerged underwater, causing many to both die and to need to relocate.
Sure, that is not good, but how does this change us here in San Bernardino? For one, the farmer’s proble...

So in conclusion, global warming is real and it is taking a toll on the Earth’s health. However, we, as a population, can stop it if we all work together. That’s right, even if you don’t think you are doing much, you are helping. No longer can we just wait anymore, now is the time for action.
