Before discussing the details of how light and heat are produced, the characteristics of sun should be kept in mind. The body of sun consists of hydrogen at high temperatures which can cause nuclear fusion. The process of fusion requires two atoms of hydrogen to fuse their nuclei and as a result significant amount of energy is released in the form of light and heat that travels all the way from sun to earth.

These “greenhouse gases make up only about 1 % of the Earth’s atmosphere; they regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that surrounds the planet” (West). Without an atmosphere, the Earth’s surface would be colder at night and become hotter during the day. The atmosphere’s main job is to regulate the temperature and secure the heat in Earth; so that the heat does not escape leaving the planet cold (King, 2008).

Solar energy is created deep within the core of the Sun. It is here that the temperature (15,000,000° C; 27,000,000° F) and pressure (340 billion times Earth's air pressure at sea level) is so intense that nuclear reactions take place. This reaction causes four protons or hydrogen nuclei to fuse together to form one alpha particle or helium nucleus. The alpha particle is about .7 percent less massive than the four protons. The difference in mass is expelled as energy and is carried to the surface of the Sun, through a process known as convection, where it is released as light and heat. Energy generated in the Sun's core takes a million years to reach its surface. Every second 700 million tons of hydrogen are converted into helium ashes. In the process 5 million tons of pure energy is released; therefore, as time goes on the Sun is becoming lighter.The chromosphere is above the photosphere. Solar energy passes through this region on its way out from the center of the Sun. Faculae and flares arise in the chromosphere.

Global warming is the increase of Earth’s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap that heat would otherwise escape from Earth. With more heat trapped on Earth, the planet will become warmer, which means the weather all over Earth will change. For example, summers will get hotter, and winters too. This may seem a good idea, but the conditions we are living in are perfect for life, and a large rise in temperature could be terrible for us and for any other living thing on Earth. The atmosphere has a number of gases, often in tiny amounts, which trap the heat given out by the Earth. To make sure that the Earth's temperature remains constant, the balance of these gases in the atmosphere must not be upset.
The term global warming refers to an unnatural and accelerated increase in temperature. These increases are mostly due to the release of heat trapping gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, halocarbons, and ozone. Almost all of these are byproducts of human commerce and activity. Things like car emissions, raising livestock, producing industrial chemicals and even deforestation add more of these chemicals to our air, throwing off the natural balance of our atmosphere (Berger 30). The mean temperature on Earth has risen about 1 degree Fahrenheit since the industrial revolution. It has been predicted that the climate could increase about 2.2 to 10 degrees in the next 100 years (EPA 2 0f 2). This data is supported by countless satellites, weather studies, oceanic studies and computer models of world wide climate patterns and this warming is inevitable (Shute et al 44). When doing global warming research one must be cautious, because the biggest source of misinformation on global warming is the fossil fuel companies who will have you believe that global warming and it’s ill effects are nothing but scientific hype.
Throughout history global warming has been on peoples minds. Global warming is “an increase in the volume of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, contributing to a “green-house” or insulating effect that traps heat from the sun’s rays and raises the average temperature around the world” (Viotti and Kauppi p 543). Some causes of this environmental threat are: pollution of harmful gases in the atmosphere, deforestation, and technological advances. The effects to the human population, animals, and agriculture could be dangerous. There are people who believe this is happening and something needs to be done. Then there are people who say global warming is a myth and our global society is not in any eminent danger. So my question is: Is global warming fact or fable?
