Literature has been a vessel -creating a new way to apprehend and understand what has happen and is happening to the world. Sodemly, do we understand the aspects of what life has to offer; nor do we understand the emotions and hardships from different cultures and walks of life. Literature is a tool that should be used explore morality and offer advice on how to explore your own individuality. As a woman, to read literary pieces that acknowledge women's struggles and overcomings has been an invaluable resource to not only my education- but to the journey my life will take from here forward. Within the story, an Antigua mother is giving instructions to her daughter, as she emerges into puberty. While analyzing the story it is evident that the mother is focused on the sexual respectability of this young girl. The mother gives instructions that include how to wash cloths, cooking, cleaning, and even how to prevent the pregnancy of an unwanted child. All the while, warning her of the “slut” she could become. This story demonstrates the oppressive guidance that young women all over the world often fall victim to. The madness hidden within this story is that as a society we tell our young girls what is betrayed as beautiful, and well mannered. Society teaches our women that expressing your thoughts is somehow insubordance. The textbook writes that because Kincaid was a girl, her family placed no value on the academic gifts she expressed interest in; to that she quotes “No one expected anything from me at all” (Kincaid 1144).
