Mr. George Washington Carver, the name can be found in textbooks across the world, but the only knowledge about Mr. Carver that all really know is that he was known as the Peanut man. Can a man really gain notoriety by being associated with the peanut? Possibly, but George Washington Carver did so much more than just create the modern-day version of peanut butter. The man created an industry out of a peanut, literally. He not only created a new niche for farmers, but he helped revolutionize agriculture. How does a man (botanist, chemist, and inventor) explain a small peanut and agriculture to others? George W. Carver’s birth does not have an exact date and there are conflicting reports about his date of birth. Most sources believe he was born into slavery around 1864(CBN News). In his words’ though, “I was about 2 weeks old when the war closed” ( National Park Service), this statement refers to the Civil War which concluded in 1865. Carver might not have a concrete birthdate but the start of his life had a unique and somewhat blessed start. George Washington Carver was born on a small farm to slave parents near Diamond Grove, Missouri, but soon was kidnapped at an early age along with the rest of his family (Bagley). His owners at the time found and took him back home and raised him and his brother as one of their own since the Emancipation Proclamation had set all slaves free. Upon reading Raymond Carver's short story of the Cathedral one will notice the literary devices used in the short story. When analyzing the story completely, one then understands the themes, motifs, metaphors, and the overall point of the piece. This leaves the reader with an appreciation of the story and a feeling of complete satisfaction.

Lincoln was born on february 12, 1809 in Hodgenville Kentucky. For most of his childhood he was mostly self educated, constantly reading books and gaining knowledge on the world around him. Even when he started as a young lawyer, he always outwardly opposed slavery. When Abraham began to get into politics he was always popular by the people. Although he lacked an education, money or powerful friends, he still managed to gain significant popularity and was described to be able to draw crowds. When Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the united states, that's when he made a real change to the world. Back in Lincoln's time, slavery was more accepted and was legal in many of the southern states in America. Although slavery was illegal in the northern states, they still contributed to slavery
George Washington Carver was a famous scientist. Carver did some work with agriculture. George discovered and did experiments with different plants used in farming. Carver helped make different pesticides to fight against insects that ate farmers crops. George Carver developed new ways that are still used today in farming today. Carver also found uses for different things like peanuts and other plants. He also was awarded many medals and honors during his life time.

Having an art teacher see his talent for painting flowers and plants inspired him to study botany at Iowa State Agricultural College. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science in 1894 and a Master of Science degree in 1896. Carver was the first African American student to graduate and was appointed to the Iowa state faculty as an assistant botanist for the Experiment Station in 1896. From the neck down you’d never think that this sculpture wasn’t created in the liking of our first president George Washington, but more that of a god like Jupiter. With his bare chest exposed and muscles chiseled, you’d think George Washington was a statue of a god if his face wasn’t so recognizable. With his face determined, brows lifted and his eyes always looking at you at whatever angle, this statue surely grabs your attention.

Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. His father was Thomas Lincoln and his mother was Nancy Hanks, both were pioneer farmers. When Abraham Lincoln was two they moved to nearby Knob Creek, Indiana. The following year his mother died. In 1819 Abraham Lincoln’s father married Sarah Bush Johnston, a kind widow who gained Abraham Lincoln’s friendship. Abraham Lincoln grew up to be a tall, gangling boy who could handle himself. He also showed intellectual promises, even though he had little formal education. In 1831 he moved again to Macon County, Illinois and finally he got a job on a cargo ship sailing down the Mississippi to New Orleans. He then returned to Illinois to settle in New Salem on the Sangamon River, were he became a clerk at a local store. In 1832 he became Captain of a company going to fight in the Black Hawk War. When the war ended he came home and he tried to open a store but that ended in a failure when his partner died. In 1833 he was appointed postmaster. But he also had to take up surveying to support himself. In time he was able to pay off his debts and began to study law.
Raymond Carver was born on May 25, 1938, in Clatskanie, Oregon, a sawmill town in the Columbia River. His father, Clevie Raymond Carver, worked in the sawmill as a saw-filer. Raymond worked for the mill at the age he became old enough to work. His father was a vicious alcoholic; ultimately foreshadowing Raymond's alcohol problem. Carver's mother, Ella Casey Carver, she was employed to raise the families income by acting as a waitress and retail jobs. His working class family faced poverty among other families in his neighborhood. Carvers father enjoyed telling and reading stories to him. Carver's father let him know stories about his heritage and likewise read to him stories. When Carver was able to pick his own books or magazines to read, Carver read magazines like "Sports Afield," "Argosy" and "Outdoor life," and some of his most loved authors included Thomas B. Costain and Edgar Rice Boroughs. Readings from these scholars motivated him to start writing his own stories at an early age.

George was a very sickly child with a whooping cough, which later led to his speech impediment, and he was tiny and puny. The autobiography Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War starts by talking about Abraham Lincoln’s childhood. He was born in 1809 in Nolan Creek, Kentucky. His parents were Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln. Abraham 's father was described as “a tinker- a piddler- always doing, but doing nothing great” (2), meaning that he did just what was necessary to survive, never really getting ahead. As Washington stated in his book, Up From Slavery, "I am not quite sure of the exact place or exact date of my birth, but at any rate I suspect I must have been born somewhere and at sometime" (29). But, in reality, Booker Taliaferro Washington was born on a slave plantation in Franklin County, Virginia on April 5, 1856, where his mother worked as a cook. Washington's father, who he knew little of, was suspected to be a white man who worked on a near-by plantation. Growing up on the slave plantation, Washington lived in the most destitute surroundings. His "home" was a fourteen by sixteen square foot log cabin that he shared with his mother, brother, and sister. He spent most of his time on the plantation doing odd work, such as cleaning and working at the mill, since he was too small to do much more.
In Short Cuts, by Raymond Carver, characters experience trials and problems in their lives, whether extreme such as in " A Small, Good Thing" and "Lemonade" or nominal such as in " Vitamins". They all seem to depict these struggles as uphill battles which the characters cannot and mostly do not overcome. The characters throughout Carver's "Short Cuts" struggle through their lives in private desperation, often to ultimately realize that they are bound to the truth of who they really are, which is shown in the story "Neighbors."
