What influences Gender Inequality in the workplace?
Functionalists have claimed that inequality is found in all societies and is therefore an essential part of modern day culture. Class, stratification, elites, fulfilled a function which is described as making sure that the best individuals were in the best employments (Osbourne and Van Loom, 1996).
The most predominant issue facing Modern Feminisim today is gender inequality (Cosslett and Baxter, 2013). It is this type of ‘work’ that is disregarded by society. Women are not paid for their household responsibilities and this is overlooked by society, as something that women are obliged to do, as a component of their gender role. It is evident that, regardless of whether a woman is in paid employment or not, they will still undertake at least two-thirds of all household and parental duties and chores (ESRC, 2013).
Gender inequality in the household has an immense influence on gender inequality in the workplace, which centers on prejudiced assumptions about gender. Padavic and Reskin, (2002) accentuate three of the primary arguments of gender inequality: sexual division of labor, the devaluation of women’s work and the construction of gender roles on the job.
Sexual division of labor is the allocation of tasks between males and females. Often, these tasks will be labeled as either a man or women’s job which influences the job allocations of men and women, as employers will adopt certain expectations of who should be performing specific jobs. Whilst these expectations will vary from between societies and change over time, the division of labor will persist and men and women will continue to do different jobs (Padavic and Reskin,
