Although women have been active members of the workforce for almost 70 years now, there is still a bias against women working. In the United States, there is still an economic bias against women throughout the stages of hiring, payment, and stereotypical jobs. Women should be able to be hired for the same jobs as men, be paid the same, understand that they can choose their jobs, and pay the same amount of money as men do for similar products. According to federal law (Gender Discriminations Law & Legal Definition), “Gender discrimination, also known as sexual discrimination, is any action that specifically denies opportunities, privileges, or rewards to a person (or a group) because of gender.” This means that if an employer gives something …show more content…

A couple of these scenarios exist in the article titled “Sex Discrimination At Work.” One common scenario is when a woman is promoted to a higher position and finds out that a man who was also promoted to the same position is being paid more than she is. This is an example of gender discrimination through salary. Employers often pay women less because of the stereotypical image of women. Women are usually looked upon as not being able to work as well as men. Stereotypically, women are supposed to stay at home cooking and caring for children. This is why women are occasionally paid less than men working at the same job. This is completely unfair, because women are as capable as men and sometimes women work faster or better than men! Employers should not continue to use old stereotypical ideas that were not even applicable in the first place. Every so often, an employer will refuse a woman a job because the other employees are not used to working with women. (“Sex Discrimination At Work") This is an example of unfair discrimination against women. Not only is the employer refusing the woman the job because of the personal opinions of the other employees, but the other employees are not open to new people and new ideas in the workplace. Also, the employer is not giving his employees the opportunity to be exposed to new people and new ideas, which will not assist his company in years to come. There are other types of gender discrimination when hiring. Another type of gender discrimination when employers are hiring is when, for example, a woman is not considered for a job that is traditionally “a man’s job.” ("Sex Discrimination: Your Rights at Work") This discrimination is also against the law and is based on bias.
