Sex and gender are two terms that are usually confusing. At one instance, a person may use the term gender while referring to sex. Most of the time, many individuals do not notice the difference and ends up repeating the matter over and over again. These two terms are very distinct. Sex in an individual is purely determined by chromosomes. The chromosomes are inborn and virtually impossible to change. However, sex is different from sex. It refers to the identity that the society imposes on a person based on their biology.
In life of an individual, these two concepts play a very critical part in determining the course of a person’s life. The book by Robert Heinlein explicitly illustrates how the two concepts relate to a person’s life. What if someone is the father and the mother at the same time? Definitely it sounds impossible. However, this simple phrase is the one that forms the baseline of this book. Gender confusion is real in this book. It talks of individuals whose sex was altered by circumstances. However, their gender could not. They found themselves unable to cope up with the tasks meant for the other gender. Definitely the had to pass through that struggle. Our communities had for a long time held to the idea that work should be classified according to gender.
If we consider the introduction of this piece of writing, it opens up with the person named ‘I” meeting with an unmarried mother. The author talks of an unknown girl who appeared suddenly in front of an orphanage in 1945. She grew alone and did not talk with everyone. This small part already brings a clear picture about gender oppression. Through this story, the author is able to make us understand the situations surrounding the mysterious girl.
