Marriage has been an important social institution; it is usually the basis for family, the functions of marriage includes reproduction, nurturance, and socialization. Marriage and motherhood for most is a rite of passage, it is one way to help , grow and develop a young woman’s character, As for the wife in “ a sorrowful woman” her inability to deal with many choices stunt her emotional grow as a wife and mother, her dissatisfaction in the role she played effectively captured her character throughout the story which lead to an identity crisis, she became helpless, withdrawn, needy, fragile and unsatisfied, she became the opposite of what history would consider an ideal
