In our media today, school lunch is often viewed as a cruel punishment to all students who set foot in the cafeteria. Despite the fact that uneaten food likely isn’t recycled from the trash, food quality is among the many issues with meals served by schools. In some places, laws have been passed to put a stop to lunch shaming, but it still persists. Sometimes a school will give less healthy lunches to students who can’t pay for it. School sustains problematic ideas about food and weight that can negatively affect a student’s mental health. “All of the negativity in school systems regarding weight have caused students to feel as if weight gain is the enemy. When you lose weight, you are healthy, but when you gain weight, it’s automatically a problem,” explains Gabriella del Rio at Body Positive Alliance. Do we want our students to be affected by these messages for the rest of their lives? Even though free school lunches can help students, they end up causing a negative relationship with food. Free school lunches provide food to millions, and help students eat healthier. However, if the food quality is poor, then the benefits of school meals are negated. Some schools that don’t have free meals shame students who can’t pay for their lunch. Unhealthy ideas about food are spread by the school system, hurting childrens’ mental stability. We must stand up for these students by ensuring legislation against lunch shaming is passed, and that free school meals are provided to the …show more content…

be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash
Definition and History of Alternative Schools The first thing one should know is what alternative schools are and how they came about. The World Book Encyclopedia (2003) defines an alternative school as, “… any public or private school that differs from traditional schools in curriculum, purpose, or teaching methods.” This definition can be traced back to the 1960’s, when free schools were created. These types of schools usually consisted of a small number of students and staff. During this

class, we were to read the conclusion of Free for All. In the conclusion, Poppendieck feels that food issues are on the radar more now than they were before. This shows that there is a desperate need to transform food. The food made now is different since programs were first developed, including the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed. Also, school programs keep getting new rules added to them, but none are eliminated. The price of school food is viewed as a cost to be minimized
the sale of healthier lunches in school can be more difficult to afford, schools should stop the sale of junk food. Obesity rates among children have tripled since the 1970s, low income students aren’t getting needed nutrition, and we’re causing bad eating habits due to unhealthy school lunches. As a result of healthier lunches we can significantly reduce obesity rates in school, making our students healthier, so spending a bit more money is worth it. Malnutrition in everyday school lunches Have you ever sat at a table one day staring at the gross block of food that sometimes schools will serve to you and just thought, how is this what I'm being served. Okay, but to be honest not all school lunches are that bad, but the point I'm trying to get across is that schools aren't getting paid nearly enough what they should be getting paid to fill all the schools children’s nutritional need along with other criteria’s. And you may be thinking why the
failing classes in school. It is not always due to the child having issues or that they have a mental disease. A lot of what we eat as humans, especially children will have an effect on our moods and behavior. The breakfasts and lunches that in the past have been served at schools are packed full of fat and sugar. This can cause children to become tired in classes, fall asleep, or it can puts the child into a sugar-dosed coma where they lose all focus in the class. Every morning in schools across the United

health of school lunches has been a very controversial topic among students, parents, schools, and the government. Parents want their children to be healthy, but at a low cost. It seems that the “healthier” the school lunches are, the more they cost and the less kids want to eat them. Also, the proportions of food may not be enough to fill the students’ stomachs. Many children also have food allergies and other medical conditions that may need to be accommodated. Many parents feel that the lunches being

definitely improved school lunches in America, however they still leave something to be desired. This is something that seems so simple to fix, but why is this problem so prevalent in our society? Mark Bittman explores this issue in an article “Serving up School Lunches of Tomorrow.” Bittman builds credibility by “joining forces with researchers from the Department of Agriculture and the University of California, Berkley’s School of Public Health to evaluate a program to increase school lunch participation
Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act has taken over schools nationwide and needs to be stopped. There are more negatives than positives that go along with this act and there needs to be an end. Schools should not have to waste money on expensive food to have it not be eaten. Students should be able to enjoy what the lunchroom has to offer. The students do not buy these lunches so the food goes to waste. In 2012, when the Healthy Hunger Free-Kids Act was made students stopped eating their school lunches and schools
