Odysseus- A Leader
It is by human nature that people inherit different qualities of importance. A fundamental characteristic that separates us as a species is those who follow, and those who lead. The traits of a leader is a subjective manner by nature, as leading may mean different responsibilities to one person in contrast to another. A leader can be fundamentally generalized in the traits they possess; this may include humility, confidence, passion, loyalty, etc. Ancient works of literature including Homer’s The Odyssey have spread Greek values of a leader’s traits through the embodiment of the main protagonist, Odysseus. Arguably one of Odysseus’ wittiest moments within the Odyssey is the general confrontation him along with his men have along Polyphemus. After a series of events leading to Odysseus and his men trespassing the cave of Polyphemus, Odysseus begins his plan to decept the cyclops; saving his men from their seemingly inescapable fate. Inducing Polyphemus to drink wine and become intoxicated, Odysseus decides to initiate his plan, telling the cyclops, “Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions.” (Hom. Od. 9.366-367). This trick pronounces Odysseus’ ability to strategize and use his intellect, as telling Polyphemus his name was “Nobody” leads Polyphemus to accuse Nobody of trying to kill him once Odysseus blinds him, a simple play on words. Additionally, Odysseus’ intelligence is particularly pronounced when he escapes from Polyphemus’ wrath. Taking advantage of the cyclops’ newly blinded appearance, Odysseus formulates a plan as
