“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” –Franklin D. Roosevelt. Franklin D. Roosevelt had to overcome life with polio in his political career to achieve his dreams of becoming America’s 32nd president.

Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York under the name Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His father, James, and his mother, Sarah, both made an impact on their son’s life. As a child, collecting things, like birds and stamps, was an adored hobby of his especially with model ships and anything associated with U.S Navy. Stamp collection was his over all his best-loved collection started at age eight, and by the time he was appointed President, this collection was world-wide famous. Taught French and German while studying Latin, mathematics, penmanship and ancient history, Roosevelt got tutored while he was six up until he was fourteen. At fourteen he was sent to Groton School for boys, approximately 35 miles north of Boston, to prep for college. Four years later he got into Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, because his father had gone to Harvard and wished his son do, too. Then another four years later he made a decision that his mother didn't agree upon– he was going to marry his distant cousin Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. On March 17, they got married on St. Patrick’s Day, their reason for this date was because President Theodore Roosevelt was coming to New York to survey the parade. 1906, their first child was born and was named Anna, followed by five more children within the next ten years: James in 1907, Franklin,Jr. the first in 1909 who died from influenza in early childhood, Elliot in 1910, Franklin,Jr. the second in 1914 and then their last child John in 1916.

Over tens of millions of Americans were appalled at the news of their president's death, who could ever replace someone who got them through so much? Becoming America's 32nd president was a great achievement when Roosevelt had to conquer life with polio. One could only begin to imagine why Franklin D. Roosevelt is often ranked upon America's greatest presidents, when you realize he's the only president to get us through an economic catastrophe (the Great Depression), a large-scale war (WWII), serve four election terms, and twelve years as president, All whilst never taking a single unaided stride.
