USING A DOCUMENTARY STYUDIED IN CLASS, HOW THE VIWER HAS BEEN POSITION TO RESPOND?
The filmmaker of the documentary the fourth kind uses a variety of codes and convention in order to make the viewer respond in a particular way. The documentary explores a series of alien abductions stories throughout Alaska. The filmmakers uses re-enactments as well as achieve footage to tell the story about a women’s quest to find out what extra-terrestrial activities have been happening in her home town. The director of the of the fourth kind uses camera lightning, interviews, achieve footage , music and statistics in order to persuade the audience in believing that extra-terrestrial beings are out there watching us. At one point in the documentary archival footage is shown. In a scene in the documentary dashboard footage of the UFO, the video cuts out while the audio continues to roll, as the officer describes something taking someone from the house with a beam of light. Later, a hypnotized patient begins to levitate. But just then, the achieve footage distorts. The use of achieve footage used with re-enactments appeals to the audience’s emotions, putting the audience in the right mood to respond in a particular way. Archival footage is used to support the reliability of the narration and interview reinforcing the ideology of the documentary. , we often underestimate the importance of film sound. Audio codes are used in the documentary to add emotion and rhythm to a film. These aren’t usually noticeable; it often provides a tone or an emotional attitude toward the story. In addition, background music often foreshadows a change in mood. For example when Mrs Abigale comes cross a recording she hears alien taking in a different and strange language that was not from this planet then suddenly gloomy background music starts to play in the background creating a mysterious and scary atmosphere contributing to the documentary’s re-enactments and archive footage .
