How Four Psychological Perspectives Would Approach Four Different Types of Personalities What is personality? Personality, which is defined as “a person’s internally based characteristic ways of thinking” (Griggs, 2016), is a large part of who a person is. In psychology, psychologists have broken down personality into originally two categories, type A and type B. However, with more research into personality, there are not a total of four personality types, type A, type B, type C, and type D. Psychologists also follow four major research perspectives which are biological, cognitive, behavioral, and sociocultural. People who have a type B personality are seen as laid back, patient, and they do not seem to take stressful situations to heart. Although this personality type is generally laid back, people with this type of personality can still be highly competitive but the do not share the same urgency for success as people with type A personality. From a biological perspective, a psychologist could say that a person that is less stressed and more laid back due to knowing exercises that can stimulate the vagus nerve or other parts of the nervous system. The vagus nerve controls the feeling of emotions such as fear and anxiety so calming this nerve reduces stress levels. From a cognitive perspective, someone could say that a person with that personality type could work well under pressure due to a more laid back approach leading to less stress. From a behavioral perspective, a psychologist could say that the person may just be resistant to stress or the persona has adapted to perform well under stress as many athletes and performers have. From a sociocultural perspective, a person would have to consider where the person came from, for example, surfers are known to be laid back and choose to “go with the flow” while Asian cultures are known for strict
