Formal Education in America

In today’s American society, it has increasingly become necessary to have formal education credentials to advance in most careers. There might have been a time where experience and the ability to perform well in one’s chosen profession were enough to prosper and succeed; this is no longer the case. In the documentary film 1Surfwise, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz stated that he “believed that knowledge and education were completely different”. The formal process of education was corrupt and did not teach the essentials to living life and that experiencing as much as nature and life have to offer. It instead just gives you knowledge, but does not prepare you to engage with other people or to deal with various circumstances. Doc Paskowitz had a truly unique view on life, family, and society. He was educated formally at Stanford Medical School, and went on to become a successful Medical Doctor, then after some bad experiences in life; he rethought his entire belief system and chose a different path to follow. After his second marriage had failed and he returned to Israel, Doc roamed the various beaches and surfing hot spots, remembering how the ocean made him feel as a young medical student when he originally had learned to surf. My own father never gave me the choice of a formal college education; he would always strive to push all of us to learn a “trade”. This has proven to be a limiting factor for me in my profession. Even after twenty-four years and numerous promotions, I find it necessary to return to school to complete a formal degree.
