Crime is a common public issue for people living in the inner city, but is not limited to only urban or highly populated cities as it can undoubtedly happen in small community and rural areas as well. In The Real CSI, the documentary exemplified many way in which experts used forensic science as evidence in trial cases to argue and to prove whether a person is innocent or guilty. In this paper, I explained the difference in fingerprinting technology depicted between television shows and in reality, how DNA technology change the way forensics evidence is used in the court proceedings, and how forensic evidence can be misused in the United States adversarial legal system.
“Crime scene processing is a critical component in the resolution of crimes against persons and property, to include homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, robbery, and drug use” (Hunkeler, I). When searching the term fingerprints on Merriam-Webster, one finds numerous definitions for the term and learns that there are various types of fingerprinting. One classification reads that fingerprints are “an ink impression of the lines upon the fingertip taken for the purpose of identification” (Merriam-Webster). Another definition explains that fingerprints are “the base-pair pattern in an individual's DNA obtained by DNA fingerprinting” (Merriam-Webster). Both of these definitions provide a worthy understanding of fingerprinting, especially dealing with the crime scene aspect. Although it may seem that it is a fairly simple concept to understand, it is complex and takes time to learn and understand the different types and ways to gather and collect fingerprints.
Forensic science has been in practice for centuries; the first textbook on forensic science was printed in China during the 1200's; in the early 1800's, a technique was developed the first test to identify arsenic in the blood stream; the early 1900's lead to the development of using fingerprinting to identify victims and suspects. While these discoveries where important in criminal investigation, they were only the beginning. Only recently has forensic science significantly refined its techniques and accuracy. Today scientists can locate, identify and trace the tiniest of particles, and identify victims and suspects, beyond a reasonable doubt through DNA analysis. DNA analysis is a scientific process among the newest and most sophisicated of techniques used to test for genetic disorders, which involves direct examination of the DNA molecule itself (Lyman, 2014) . Today crime labs use mtDNA analysis. This type of analysis allows smaller degraded pieces of DNA to still be successfully tested (Lyman, 2014) . The career I would like to pursue in the future is a Medical Examiner. This job has always seemed to be very interesting. I chose this because I would like to become someone who is important in different situations. Some situations that Medical Examiners could help in are to help a family find out why a loved one passed away or help detectives find out the identity of the person. A Medical Examiner examines the dead bodies and determine how the person died. They could also assist in criminal cases. Some of the skills that are needed to be a Medical Examiner are active listening, science, judgment and decision making.
