What do you get when science and law meet? When science and law meet you get forensic science. The word forensic means “relating to or concerning the law”. Forensics is a term short for forensic science, it is the application of science and technology using the tools of scientific study in law enforcement and court cases. It wasn’t long ago that it was considered rare that evidence proved that a criminal was guilty. In fact, many crimes were solved by eyewitnesses or by the criminal’s confession. It wasn’t that criminals did not leave evidence but perhaps science and law haven’t met yet. There are many things that investigators take for granted today. They must complete the police academy training prior to being classified as a forensic science technician. New forensic science technicians will typically assist experienced technicians during on-the-job training, providing them with hands-on involvement. When forensic science technicians arrive at a crime scene, they must carefully collect and protect the evidence. They may also assist law enforcement officers in recreating the crime by anticipating the relations between the pieces of evidence that have been collected. They use the laboratory to decode the evidence collected at the crime scene and often must classify unknown substances and objects to determine if these substances and objects are connected to the victim and the suspect. They may run chemical tests and other analyses to determine the origin or condition of objects and use their knowledge of ballistics to determine the type of gun that fired a bullet at a crime. Forensic scientists help solve all crimes, including arson, rape, robbery, burglary, theft, forgery, and fraud. Forensic scientists also work on civil cases. In criminal law, the government - such as federal, state, and local - prosecutes and punishes people who harm the public safety. In civil cases, individuals seek compensation for private wrongs. An example of this is a car accident. As a criminal case, the reckless driver can be prosecuted and punished by the government for harming the public safety. At the same time, the person whose car was hit can sue the driver in a civil court for costs of damages and injuries that were suffered.
