First They Killed My Father, a memoir, was written by survivor of the Cambodian genocide, Loung Ung. The text was narrated in first person by the main character Loung Ung who was going through the process of maturing and attempting to survive. The text gave the readers insight into the character’s mind with an intriguing plot, packed with emotions which induce empathy and allowed the readers to establish a connection with Cambodia’s history. The strong emotions induced in the beginning of the text allowed the readers to understand what situation the character was in. Through the tone of the character spoke in, the readers understood that Loung was frustrated when she took on the seven day walk. When Loung was told that she had to leave the village, Ma’s ‘words [stabbed Loung’s] heart like a thousand daggers,” (Loung Ung, page 160) realising that she was to leave the whole family and be alone. The readers got the message that despite the years of bond established throughout the years, Loung must leave Ma and there was nothing that can be done. The readers was able to dictate that Loung’s fate was certain and the chances of seeing Ma again was unlikely. As Ma drove Loung away, Ma ‘[gave Loung] a hard swat on the butt’ (Loung Ung, page 161) and pushed her away making her mad at Ma. During the journey, Loung’s ‘blood [boiled] with resentment towards [Ma]’ (Loung Ung, page 161) as walked away from the village. This made the readers feel uneasy to witness the hatred Loung had for Ma and wonder where their relationship
