Studies have shown that 90 percent of secondary schools offer classes in music, theater, and/or visual arts but only so many of this schools sufficiently funding them. Removing these classes from school curriculum would rob youth of a chance to excel in something other than academics. State funding for schools must insure that the arts are maintained in public schools There are three main reasons that fine arts are beneficial. This reasons being, research indicates that students involved in art and music excel in other subjects as well, music enables students to access different parts of their brain, and the fine arts give youth productive pastimes and teach important values. Hence, fine arts programs benefit students in their education by improving test scores and intellectual ability. Those who participate in fine arts programs show higher levels of confidence in academics than those who don't have instruction in this area. A study, conducted in 2004 and published in Psychological Science, discovered that there was an increase in the IQ’s of the children who were given instruction in arts and music. In the article The Arts are a Vital Part of Education, we read that “Students who take fine arts classes are 4 times more likely to receive more recognition for academic achievement." Because students are already doingbetter in their education through fine arts, the recognition they will receive will be increased even more. One value is perseverance, which increases a student’s ability to be patient and diligent in all aspects of life. Those who have learned perseverance are more likely to strive for perfection in other areas; the more that is expected of them, the more they will be willing to give to achieve. Another important value that students of the fine arts learn is cooperation. In order to be successful in a school band, choir, orchestra, dance team, drama group, etc, the ability to cooperate with others is vital. Arts & Music in Public Schools: An Overview states: “Research has indicated that students involved in art and music tend to exceed average achievement in other areas of the curriculum and outside of school.” This is likely due to the multitude of additional skills they must master, including the those already mentioned. Fine arts students must learn to work together and adapt to even the weakest part of the group and also to have patience for themselves and others as they, together, strive for excellence. All of these skills require discipline, which every student needs in order to be successful in life and in any career.
